What did technological development in the colonies bring to the Earth? The kind of technology the Earth wants most: military power. Destruction is part of human nature that can never be gotten rid of, and now the colonies are developing a militaristic disposition. The colonies cannot forget the Earth.

I guess they believe that the bloodshed would lead to higher morale [to further unite the colonies.]
So why do people fight anyway? Perhaps the meaning of human existence lies within their will to fight. People feel a sense of accomplishment through battle. And it's also a fact that the ones who are actually fighting are never perceived as being tainted.

Genki is just a textbook, which Tae Kim basically is as well, but it's available for free online. JapanesePod101 is a podcast featuring a guy with a somewhat annoying voice and regular native speakers that together work through grammar and expressions et.c, using less and less English as they move on. Only some major lectures are that big. You might have 1 or 2 of those a semester after first year, and the rest of your classes are much smaller, usually 15-60 students and held either by a prof doing it for a hobby or a non-phd lecturer. The way most schools do it is that there's a couple specific classes you need in order to finish your degree, and the rest of the requirement is just a certain number of generic credits within certain faculties. The required courses are always huge, while the rest are much smaller as thousands of students spread out along hundreds of optional courses.
Plus, even the larger lectures have tutorials that are usually no more than 20 students.
