It is hard to write about encounters with Renji's party since Haru's party stays in an area for a long time until the monsters in the area become easy for them to kill.
Like I think Haru's party holds the record for staying the longest time in goblin town before they eventually moved to the Kobold Area.

If he's the healer he has to either learn how to use a crossbow and rotate his squad to heal them when they are injured or he has to wear a breast-plate and helmet so he can go into melee without worrying about fatal injury as much.

That explanation kinda works if you say that this is a game world and it just takes a lot of hits to deplete his HP because they're so weak. But if it's a realistic world as it seems to be, it doesn't matter how weak you are so long as you're putting holes in the enemy. And they definitely managed that, although very clumsily.
They could have stopped at the knife in the neck or the blow to the head and they'd still have looked weak without making the goblin seem weirdly strong.
