I flat out laughed when I first read the chapter with Gear Fourth. I really preferred the kind of power ups Second and Third were, using the power of rubber as their base, exaggerations that weren't too extreme. They had distinct weaknesses originally too.
Fourth is extreme. Luffy becomes a gigantic, ripped King Kong with Haki tattoos. It increases his speed, power and resistance to damage immensely. He can even virtually fly.
but Oda still manages to keep it grounded somewhatno pun intended. with bouncing side effect played as humour and the harsh effect it has on his body. Luffy has always been about substance over style with his moves throughout the series and his one big power up being utterly ridiculous looking can be arguably fitting. I understand that for Luffy to contend with the monsters waiting farther in the New World like the Yonko he would have to have something new. I'm not a huge fan of it but I think it's played alright for what it is.
I'm not commenting on what Toei did to it though of course. I don't even want to bother with how depressing it is.
