Tatsumi with the Jaegers would make them way too overpowered. He'd probably be compatible with some crazy high-level Teigu, and combined with Esdeath, they'd just steamroll Night Raid and Wild Hunt.

Haven't reached the end of what's out on the manga, but I must say that the anime did fuck up the ending. They spent the whole time making Akame a mysterious person, who we never know about, and then the series falls on her.
Although, I will say, can tatsumi just stick in Esdeath already? I get that he was in love with another, but when it comes to to a choice between sex or possible being killed by an ice queen, I'm going with the sex.

Most anime protagonists aren't meant to be smart. Smart protagonists are a lot harder to write, especially since you have to elevate the conflicts for them to deal with. Stupid characters means easier conflicts to come up with.
