To be fair, upon a reread it actually isn't that bad. She definitely did causes fair share of their bad situations, but most of them were out of good intentions or were legitimately pay things she couldn't control.

The thing about the DMCA system is that it was drafted, voted on, and passed, by a bunch of old retards who knew shit about how the internet actually functions.
The current DMCA is basically a "we'll take your word for it" type of deal. Youtube is the most obvious means of seeing how blatantly retarded this system works. Along with zero foresight on how much it could be abused by corporations.
If you make a video with content in it, no matter how little it may actually infringe on anything or qualifies as fair use (a very grey area because nobody wants to risk a court battle to create a precedent); it can be flagged and it will be forcibly taken down. What's particularly stupid, is that the ones demanding the takedown don't have to prove anything. Even people who don't actually own the copyright can send a flag, because the burden of proof lies soley on the accused for some fucking reason.
This applies to stuff like fantranslations as well, (once again a grey area). Except it's even worse because there are no systems in place for a person to fight off a DMCA unlike Youtube (which actually has started doing so after a certain court resolved one issue).
To be fair most companies are only really aggressive with the DMCA's because of something called "abandonment". Basically if they are lax in "protecting" their intellectual property (IE sending legal teams after every anon on the internet and their mother), then their copyright ownership can be forcibly taken away.
But in the case like this it isn't really that, since there's no reason to believe a fantranslation would result in mistaken ownership or the like. It's just the Japanese not understanding how shit works, and are being retarded dicks again.

This series is really great if you're into /tg/ related stuff honestly. Rather than video game RPG stuff like the people who shout out "SAO clone!" think; Gifting reminds me more of the classic DnD style.
It was really cool hearing a story like Keele's where he turned into a Lich in desperation to protect his loved one rather than the "lol I want to be evil and have unlimited power" like a lot of people who roleplay act.
Aqua is a wonderful goddess. Would worship.

He mentions he got his mask from Wiz's shop, but doesn't actually mention Vanir or Wiz. Which might be a bad idea considering Aqua "kill every undead in sight for being an affront to the gods" claims Eris is even more extreme than her with that.

It definitely shows that the author took the time to actual world-build to a degree. I can't tell you how many series I've been disappointed with that really lacked that basic concept.
Gifting has an interesting world with some neat plays on the classics. Not to mention that it is never really random but usually ties into some other previously mentioned part of the world.
It's obviously not the most amazing setting to exist, but it's neat to see that some work and creativity actually went into it.

I'm fine with series talking a tone or genre shift, it's just too many of them do it poorly that I end up really disliking it.
Negima was an example of a really good genre shift. Going from harem shit romantic comedy, to harem shit battle shounen. But it did so gradually, and at a very natural pace; but also had some really essential foreshadowing in the beginning to make the shift jarring.
Too many series fail to do that, and the transition from light to grimdark seriousness just becomes silly. With many of them doing it solely for the purpose of doing it as a twist (or as some say, Shamalalalah-ing it).
I'm glad Gifting never takes that route.

For a LN, I would rank Gifting a lot higher than most. The characters are surprisingly well characterized, where I can tell the difference from one character to the next, the world is interesting and not so irritating with stupid ass rules or customs, and most of all, the mc is a blast. If there's one thing 90% of LNs fail at, it's having an interesting mc.

I'd take an interesting and well-fleshed out character over being able to relate to them any day.
It's like people forget why characters become remembered or iconic in the first place. It's not how much you empathize with them, but how much you are compelled by them.
