Hey there. Black Jack had a few controversial chapters that Tezuka sealed, a few of which were republished recently. I scanned the ones that were included in a recent Black Jack volume, and acquired scans of all but 3 of the remaining sealed chapters. The remaining 3 are included in the kanzenban editions, but those run $30 or so each, which I don't have the money for at the moment.
Anyway, I'm looking for an editor/translator. I think I have either scans or transcriptions for the chapters that Vertical put out, so those would just need an editor.
I'll dump the sealed Black Jack chapters in the meantime, and will take chapter requests. First up is Falling Object, chapter 209.

I wonder how Vertical feels about the fact that Tezuka Productions released more sealed chapters a short while after Vertical published their "complete" hardcover editions. Oh well.

The shit that Black Jack has to put up with.

Ha, that's great. I know some modern audiences find Tezuka's comedy bits jarring in his serious works like Black Jack (for instance, the kangaroo tail in >>136215487), but there are times when it works really well.
As an old Black Jack fan, I just want to say you are doing god's work. Thank you!

Was this chapter not translated in English?
>>136216171
No, it was sealed until recently.
What's the appeal of this? the art is horrendous, the characters make no sense, and the slapstick humor is aggravating.
Is this just for hipsters who want to feel good about reading manga drawn 2 decades before their date of birth?

I was about to post the same thing, but I wasn't sure what image to use to accompain the post. Guess you were faster than me.

GRIFFIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITH
Sorry to ask, but I'm not too clear. How many chapters need to be translated, besides the 3 you don't yet have scanned?
I might be able to help out.
>>136213723
Why were they sealed? was it his own decision, or did the media not like the subject matter?
>>136216333

Finger, Vegetable, and The Wall need to be translated. I think that's it. Hydrocephalus, Sinking Woman, and Won't Stop Bleeding whenever I scan them.
>>136216333
The subject matter & stories being told. Tezuka's simple drawing style allowed him to make more manga than anyone (I think maybe ishinomori did more panels?)

>I'm a doctor and a catholic!
I kinda understand why would he seal this chapter, he probably feared backlash for depicting catholics as superstitious, ostracizing people.

This is why I love Black Jack.

Wow, I wonder if the baby in Berserk actually IS based on this one.

I love chapters that feature Kiriko, since he and Black Jack have such a great dynamic. I kinda sympathize with Kiriko, though, since I believe in the right to die (when one is a consenting adult, at the very least).

Huh, weird, I'm pretty sure iI've read Sinking Woman, Hydrocephalus, and Won't Stop Bleeding in Italian some years ago.

This is so going to be a "Life finds a way" chapter.

Tezuka's choice.
Same reason why the chapters aren't in chronological order in the normal collections. He picked the best ones first, and some of them he wasn't pleased with.
I do remember one particular one which is the proto-version of a proper chapter that did make it into the normal collection. It was "sealed" just because it was an inferior version of the same story.

Look!
It's Casca's baby!

See, this chapter I definitely remember reading in Italian before. I mean you don't really forget the story of a child like that.IIRC at the end the one that gets 'normalized' kills his brother because when they were united they had the ability to talk between themselves (while normally only one was awake at a time), agreed that the one with freedom of movement would do it, rather than allow his brother to live as a cavy-
>>136220951
Yeah, Vertical published this one as well.

I don't think he's ever used well, because he never gets to spell out his own motivations. He's adamant about euthanasia in a way that doesn't really show a positive side to it.
I love him in concept, he makes a great medical antagonist. But he never really gets to play the "it has been enough" part. He ALWAYS quits as soon as he starts.
I've never read BlackJack past the original end, the train chapter. I felt that was a nice way to close it. It was bittersweet but it was nice.
Should i read the rest? Any important events or a final chapter with more closure?
Whatever chapters I think of dumping next.
>>136221417
Plenty of the remaining chapters are still great. There's a lot of very early stories you're missing on, which are interesting.
I -think- there were a couple of chapters that continued the story of his vengeance on the people who failed to account for the bomb that killed his mother.
>>136221209
I agree totally. I love Tezuka, I love Black Jack, but I'll be the first to admit this manga can be a subtle as a punch to the face. So all the exploring of the nuance has been left for the Japanese fan artists. Too bad I can't read moon runes!
>>136221612
The stories that involve his sister are my favorites.
One because he has to prove he can walk the walk when he's the one facing a painful certain death.
The other one because of the drama ofkilling his own father.
Vertical finally got around to releasing Black Jack via ebook, if you feel likebuying it.
