I've only watched the anime, because I have no idea where to read the manga. But as slow as part 1 of the anime may be, the second and third seasons are some of the best stuff I've ever watched, great animation, action, ridiculous and ludicrous plot, good music and Dio evolves into one of the most hype antagonists I've ever seen. I'm at the end of the anime now, and can understand why it might seem unnappealing at first. But keep on watching, it's definitely worth it.

He had zero motivation until Part 6 beyond his generic desire for power, which makes him no better than an average Saturday morning cartoon villain. Kira had serious mental issues and was a psychopath, but his aspirations were small, and he got much more thorough characterization throughout his part than Part 3's DIO, who would have been no better than Diavolo if he did not have his Phantom Blood incarnation to fall back on as a character.

The concept of Stands is less lazy than the Ripple, but the execution of Stands was admittedly incredibly lazy in Part 3, which just seemed to be a showcase of what kinds of powers you can expect from Stands more than anything. If Stands were introduced from the start, it's likely that Stardust Crusaders would not have turned out to be such a "Monster of the Week" shitfest.
