Actually I found the ecchi humor to be perfectly fine and I loved the limbo scene. The problem is what is between the humor/ecchi scenes and action scenes.
There's like litterally nothing for the MC. He doesn't have any goal, no dream, no problem, he's just Mai's servant and that's litterally it. There's nothing to root for or be excited about.
Heck, if Mai was the MC the anime would automatically become much more exciting.
The premise is good, but the LN author completely fucked the execution right at the start. I only hope the MC will become worth something or get fucking killled at this point.

It was just a seasonal. One of the better anime of its season, something that most people watch because it's airing, but nothng special, and the only reason anyone still talk about it is because it was made by Kyoani. It is pretty much Dog Days. Just seasonal filler, not something you put in your backlog, unless you have an interest in that kind of stuff.

There was Shirobako and Yuuki Yuuna and Shigatsu, it wasn't without competition. Didn't follow anime closely that season, but that's all new stuff that seems notable+some sequels to some older popular seasonals.
But that's not the point, in the larger scale of things, when you look at things across many years, despite being relatively good when you just look at its season, it's not something that really stands out when you look at the 2010s as a whole for example.

I suppose you're right. The show was enjoyable and maintained a high level of quality, but it didn't really rock the boat enough to stand out in the grand scheme of things.
Now its only real legacy is Sento, which I'm quite okay with. Like, when the show was airing I went as far as to say that Sento was the most sexual (not sexy) character I'd seen in years.
