His theme is "distance." We know this. VoaDS and 5cm/s explored distance through time and space.
He tried to branch out with Children who Chase Lost Voices, but that film is unarguably his weakest.
He went back to the formula with Garden of Words, exploring distance inage.
I think his movies are beautiful, artistically and thematically, but am worried that his next one will be stale.

The thing is the visuals themselves are always conveying the same things. The distance between characters, the apparent loneliness of characters, the devotion of a character, and so on. The writing is always self-indulgent, his insights are always shallow, and his characters are never remotely decent. There's differences in his films, but they're only superficial when you get down to it. He lacks imagination as far as I can tell.

An anon falls in love with a copypasta.
Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with a threadly reminder. Never minding the strange premise, he immediately posts it, and is overjoyed to find out that anons have a crush on it as well.
But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's threadly reminder to the anons, they only look at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the threadly reminder he posted is not the same reminder he fell in love with. In fact, it doesn't exist in this universe at all. It is the reminder's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of its crush.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, STALENESS ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of FINDING A WAY.
His movies have become less like movies and more like his portfolio filler since they do the exact same story every time with just different characters.
