They can not cut through any tempered steel or any heavy folded iron weapon.

There are multiple cases of a broadsword chipping or breaking another sword forged with older techniques.
Katanas can chip and cut into each other if one was forged more than another.
However a katana can not cut through a broad sword, this is objective.
They were never able to forge one strong enough to do so.

You should really read some history. Japanese officers in WW2 would routinely slice through steel machine guns and other modern steel equipment when there was close in fighting. Reports of their ferocity were actually probably why America had to resort to bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki. You could reasonably say that the katana is the only sword that ever had to be countered with nuclear weapons.
