I just finished rewatching this, and I have to say, it really was a great anime.
Does it still hold up visually and animation-wise? Sunrise is pretty based, so I assume it does.

Yea thats why i dont give a shit about the Ranma anime either. They made a new character as Kuno's lackey that basically is Gosunkugi, then later still introduce Gosunkugi as a character. Plus they skip the decent fights like the Ryu Kumon and Herb arcs.

I would say yes just go through the Manga and skip the TV anime more than anything else.
Though if you can watch the OVAs after you read the manga to see certain parts of the manga animated if you want. Still though in my opinion I found them largely underwhelming compared to the original manga but they don't cut out a bunch of stuff as much as the TV anime does.
The movies are self contained stories that you can watch after reading past when Ukyo was been introduced. The first one is meh and the second one is decent

Sasuke fills Gosunkugi's roles early on but he's not the same character at all. Also they didn't animate the Ryu Kumon/Herb arcs because the anime was cancelled before the manga ever got that far. (Reboot plz)
Ranma anime had some decent filler episodes. (It helped that even in the manga it becomes an episodic sitcom after the first few arcs.) "Ranma's Declaration of Womanhood" was/is legendary.

You know I've never believed in "filler" per se but Inuyasha has some of the most shameless, unabashed filler in any TV anime outside of 70s Toei I can think of. Moreover, there wasn't a single likeable character outside of the pervert priest because it was a shitty shoujo anime sold as a shonen. The series had maybe five good fights (remember that it's supposed to be a battle shonen), and a countless number of WIND SCAR LOL episodes.
I watched it with some pretty ghetto fansubs back in like 2006 so maybe I'm biased.
