That was an American idea born during the Vietnam war. Helicopters were too vulnerable while hovering and firing and jets were useless in keeping the Vietcong suppressed (didn't help that some jets didn't even have a gun once they exhausted their bombs or missiles).
So one American commander ordered bolting machine guns into a transport and ordered that when suppression fire is required, that modded transport would circle around and suppress an area. It worked so well they expanded its mission to also suppress convoys moving in on friendly positions.

I actually looked up the transport and found out it was almost as capable as the C-130 when it came to terrain flexibility, as well as being used for almost everything the C-130 does, but on a larger scale.

It really is, it's by far the most flexible transport aircraft we have.
My job in the AF is to load and unload cargo onto aircraft, and C-17s are by far the best ones to work with. The C-5 can carry more, sure, but its hydraulics tend to break a lot, and there's just so many nifty features on the C-17 that makes the job easier and smoother. I'm talking about moving pallets of cargo that each weigh 10,000 lbs, any simplicity is appreciated.

America thought having high-tech missiles and supersonic aircraft signaled the end of mandating a rapid-fire gun for dogfighting, so their F-4 aircraft in Vietnam didn't have guns until later. Problem was, this left them with nothing to fight with once they ran out of missiles, and no means to accurately engage when they were within easy range of enemy MiGs.
The other problems were that the two missile types carried had teething problems, and either malfunctioned or couldn't be used at their effective ranges due to engagement restrictions at the time, which forced pilots to come back down to subsonic speeds to establish a lock-on.
In the end, the USAF had to add gunpods, with the Marines opting to equip double gunpods in order to provide strafing surpression fire. And in irony, properly sighted gunpods ended up being more advantageous than the missiles. Later F-4s got their internal vulcan later on.

Not really. Navy Phantoms never had guns or gunpods installed and they enjoyed a much better K/D than Air Force Phantoms, even when the AF ones had guns equipped. The difference was in training, as early on, most American pilots were not trained properly in dogfighting, and were instead told to fly as conservatively as possible. Vietnam is the direct reason why we have Top Gun and Red Flag.
