NGNL is a special case of being both casual/newfag bait and otaku-bait at the same time, which is why it was popular (similar to SAO). However, as someone that's been into anime for a while, in my eyes the show didn't really do anything that hasn't been done much better. None of the characters were even particularly like-able or even felt like a characters at all besides Steph. Aside from her, both the characters and the relationships all they all shared felt as shallow as the kid's side of the swimming pool.

Disregarding how it gave the main cast a hilariously unfair advantage at times, the show was easy to follow and fun to watch. In my personal opinion, the episode where they fought and beat Jibril was best; everyone becoming sfw naked, princess getting bullied, and blowing up the god damned universe were all enjoyable.
The worst parts were when the siblings could magically guess everything from a mathematical standpoint, worst offender being the gun ricochet thing. That was more ridiculous than Mythbusters could have ever done.
I didn't read the original source material, but the show made me interested. Definitely not for everyone though.

I don't know about the anime but the LN is enjoyable as all hell.
Especially the last volume that show cases how humans are the weakest of the races and continuously get their shit handed to them.
And the whole past history with Disboard.

I liked the sound design and use of colors. The humor was okay, and the fanservice was fine to great. The main characters were unlikable and unsympathetic, and the logic and motivations of many side characters were between idiotic and impossible to comprehend. I was honestly rooting for them to lose at many points. I liked the voice acting sometimes, and the references didn't feel too overly forced. Overall, I fairly enjoyed watching it but I don't think I'd rewatch it or watch a S2.

As you lurk more you will notice that this always happens with shows that get way too popular. Looking at threads before and after airing is hilarious.
See One Punch Man, for exemple, before airing it was that great ONE comic scrabbles, and after airing, well soon someone will quote me to say how bad, cliche and overused it is
The color scheme/wizard of oz shit was pretty cool until it started burning my eyes. Apart from that is was just pretty fun.
The show did help me make an awesome friend my freshman year of college, so it has that going for it at least.
