The military is the biggest group of nerds, geeks, dweebs, etc. Watching anime and playing video games was one of the few ways you could get your mind off the sucky parts because you're trapped in doing it until your contract is up.

You learn early on not to give a fuck what everyone else thinks about you.

Probably to take their mind off all the bullshit that comes with being in the armed forces. That's part of the reason for myself anyway.

My country still has conscription I didn't sign up for this shit, but here I am.

My only two joys in life are watching anime and seeing those idealistic fucks who willingly signed up because they thought the military was cool after having played too many video games, only to realize that they can't handle being told what to do and getting yelled at on a daily basis.

Military pride isn't even big around these parts.

Soldiers are given respect, but seeing how poorly the general public received our operations as a part of ISAF during the conflict in Afghanistan, I don't think most regular citizens care particularly for the nation's troops.

As for the idiots joining the army with warped expectations, I blame Hollywood. Ever since being liberated by American forces and receiving Marshall Aid following the second World War, my country has seen the US very favourably and allowed a lot of American culture to take root. Not that this is a bad thing.

I think a lot of young people these days get seriously sidetracked by how army life is portrayed in video games and action-movies. They all seem shocked when they're handed a mop and told that they'll be swabbing the barracks floor for the rest of the afternoon.

We're also seeing an increase in recruits following all the issues we've been having with immigrants from the Middle-East. People are worried about losing national identity due to excessive multiculturalism.

All in all, army life in little old Denmark is getting shittier by the minute.

First of all I just want to state that armed forces operate very differently across the globe, so I can only answer in respects to the Danish one.

1. Yeah in the case of the RDA it refers strictly to the use of IFV's and transports. So we have combat vehicles that to the untrained eye would probably look like tanks, but they're not (CV90, Piranhas etc.) So we don't -just- have armored transports, but we don't have true tank elements either.

2. I think this is different from army to army as well. In the RDA a "Brigade" is made up of multiple different elements. The First Brigade of the RDA for example consists of Dragoon Regiments, Guard Hussar Regiments and Tank Companies. So it's larger than a regiment and more versatile.

A regiment in the RDA is small and more specialized.

>we don't have true tank elements either.
I see. This is me speaking from a completely civilian perspective, but what is the point of having a regiment made specifically for armored transports but still isn't a mechanized regiment? Why not just give armors to infantry regiments as well?
>So it's larger than a regiment and more versatile.
That makes much more sense.

As for combat doctrine, are tactics generally the same across similar regiments, or does it differ from brigade to brigade? Like, would an armored regiment from one region in Denmark operate under slightly different tactics than one in another region or is that standardized via tactical manuals or education of the sort?
>>
>>136105372
>Midshipman
Ensign, O1
>Sub-lieutenant
I think that's equivalent to Lieutenant (JG), O2
>Defence Force Training
It's different for all the branches, but as an WEEO, after I've gotten my bachelors in engineering I do my New Entry officers course and the Naval Academy.

>This course covers drill and ceremonial, physical training, officer development, oral and written communications, naval message writing, management and leadership, officer of the day duties, Navy organisation, Defence studies, character guidance, Navy history, swim test*, first aid, small arms training, adventure training, and a training cruise.

Then I do my employment training that specialises me for the systems I'd be working with.

>This course supplements theoretical degree education with training in fields specific to engineering in the Navy such as weapon hydraulics, radar, sonar, missile and gunnery fire control systems, ship communications equipment and maintenance administration procedures.

Combined thats an extra 40 weeks of study on top of a 4 year degree.

>but what is the point of having a regiment made specifically for armored transports but still isn't a mechanized regiment?

Armored Infantry is synonymous with Mechanized Infantry in the RDA. I'm Mechanized Infantry, we just call it Armored Infantry around here. I'm translating from Danish on the fly so I apologize if some things seem unclear.

>would an armored regiment from one region in Denmark operate under slightly different tactics than one in another region or is that standardized via tactical manuals or education of the sort?

Denmark is small relative to most other nations and while I don't actually know for certain (I haven't spoken much to anybody from the RDA's 1st Brigade, I'm 2nd Brigade), I would imagine that all tactics are standardized.

I know for a fact that the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Armored Infantry receives the same training as 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Infantry.

I attached a picture of the command structure for the RDA, figure it might help paint the picture a little better.

Oh that makes sense. In America Mechanized Infantry is along the lines of armored vehicles/transport and stuff strictly (at least to my knowledge) and Armored Infantry/Armor is just straight up tanks.
> I would imagine that all tactics are standardized.
Ok that makes sense. I don't know much about American tactics but I know rules of engagement are more or less taught the same across the country (then again, I'm not in the military so I wouldn't know). One more question: how does numbering brigades/regiments go? Are those just chosen by how many regiments/brigades there were at its creation or is there something else to it? Also, I know divisions in the US have their own names of sorts, does that sort of thing happen in Denmark?

>One more question: how does numbering brigades/regiments go?

There's nothing special to the numbering of brigades and regiments. The 1st Brigade is not of a higher quality than the 2nd Brigade or anything like that, same goes for the regiments. 1st Brigade has different duties from 2nd Brigade, but that's the only real difference.

>I know divisions in the US have their own names of sorts, does that sort of thing happen in Denmark?

Are you referring to stuff such as nicknames for divisions á la "Screaming Eagles" for the US 101st Airborne?

Different regiments of the RDA have mottos, insignias, anniversaries they celebrate, mascots and regimental belts. I'm afraid I'm not aware of any nicknames that are really noticeable. My regiment is commonly referred to as "GHR's", but that's about it.

Pic related is my regiments insignia

Ok that's what I thought.

Well sorta, like some of the division names are pretty dumb, like the 42nd https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/42nd_Infantry_Division_(United_States)

Given the poor public image the military has in the US (I blame our huge military budget) I totally agree.

1st Brigade may be a tanker corps, while 2nd is reconnaissance, 3rd is is LAV, etc.

>anniversaries they celebrate

Different regiments wear different belts that identifies them. Essentially, what regiment you are part of. Anniversaries would be different battle honours, because 1 brigade may have fought at battle a, but 2 brigade may have fought at battle b, and they celebrate their own battles respectively.

RDA's 1st Brigade are the ones that get deployed in foreign nations during war, 2nd Brigade are responsible for homeland security.

>like the 42nd

Oh damn, that's a pretty interesting insignia. No we don't have anything quite like that.

>Like what sort of anniversaries/belts

Anniversaries are usually days in history where the regiment proved themselves on the field of battle.

It can also be an anniversary to honor a particularly competent and respected commander.

Finally most regiments celebrate the day of their founding.

Regimental belts are another way of distinguishing troops from different regiments. In the RDA they're very colorful and only really worn during ceremonies or celebrations.

Pic related is 1st Armored's Regimental belt.

>So you don't have to wear your belt where ever you go? How strict is your regiment about uniforms?

The belt is a part of our dress uniform. We are required to wear dress uniform at all times except for when we're off-duty or drilling. It's essentially like wearing a suit when you go into office, if that makes sense. So the belt is only really worn during clerical work, meetings, celebrations and inspections.

Uniform policy is strict, but of course all things are within reason. If we come wading into the barracks covered in mud and sweat after having finished a drill, it's not like the officers will immediately start berating us for not being proper.

However if you show up in a tank-top and baggy pants for a meeting with a superior officer, you better believe you're in for an earful and a punishment.
>>
>>136106531
We get different patches too! There are many identifiers on the uniform the civilian may not notice, down to the way we hem our pant legs. There are way to many different traditions to pin down in, but every regiment has their own identifier.

> In the RDA they're very colorful and only really worn during ceremonies or celebrations. So you don't have to wear your belt where ever you go? How strict is your regiment about uniforms?

A level of strict you could never dream of. Proper uniform etiquette is way too much for one simple post to describe. We spend more hours learning how to present ourselves than you can imagine, though our basic training, right through to when you are a cenotaph guard. Every occasion means a different way of wearing the uniform.

Also not the Dane again, doing my best from what I have learned. Cool how different our histories are, but we pretty much get it when it comes to how things are
>>
>>136106676
But also this. If the CO summons me and just spent a week in the field, he wont mind how dirty I am. But if I show up for remembrance day with even the tiniest crease on my cenotaph guard uniform...
>>

See on one hand I would like this since I'm a super clean freak but on the other I would get frustrated super fast.
> Cool how different our histories are, but we pretty much get it when it comes to how things are
Yeah America tends to emphasize cool tech and stuff over the quality of its soldiers. The media as well tries REALLY HARD to emphasize how courageous and patriotic and heroic our soldiers are. An action flick about Bengazi is about to come out soon by Michael Bay and it shows the soldiers there as some sort of self-sacrificing matyrs. Just wish there was more ways to read up on the military without misinformation (mostly because I barely know anyone who's in the army, and also because a lot of them are redneck hoodlums)

I wouldn't anyway, Australia has glorious socialist education polices m8. Still have to pay them off but the government takes on student loans at a low interest rate and up until the last election we had a regulated tertiary education system. Hopefully we'll get them all back after the current conservitive reign is over.

Good luck with your book anon. Make sure it has mobile suits in it. Every engineer I know who watches anime with me wants to make power armor in some way shape or form. I want to make Gundams, an old highschool budy wants to make Fallout style power armor, and more than a few guys want to build 40K suits and take genetic modifications, and we're crazy enough to make it happen, some how, if we managed to get around all the reliablity issues and power inefficencies.

>>136106483
You're absolutely right, even if it sucks dick I can leave after 4 years and get almost any job I want where as a lot of guys with my degree are still entry level coders getting shit pay, and I know that's hell. I'll be fine, and I'll make it, and if we ever serve in a joint operation we'll watch the latest episode of Gate and laugh at how the JSDF would never be able to conduct such an operation with out international support during liberty.

Alright guys, be honest, how likely is armed confict with Japan if they end up barring your access to a land filled with elfs and cat girls?

Absolutely zero because Japan's JSDF is weak as shit and China would probablly threaten conflict with Japan if not for America. America or UN forces might take over the operation if something of that magnitude happens (if the Japanese aren't able to keep it under wraps)
>Good luck with your book anon.

I have a sci fi setting with land mechs (no space mechs, although there are powered suits and exos for personelle space combat)

Army policies have changed a lot over the past five years when it comes to punishments. I saw punishments the most during basic at the stage where people still weren't quite taking army life seriously and pretty much all of it involved "getting dropped" (Doing physical exercise as punishment).

Officers aren't allowed to abuse lower-ranking members of the army as much as they once were, but they will still definitely shout at you, get right up in your face and can make your life really damn frustrating.

Broad punishments aren't uncommon in my unit. As in if one person fucks up or is lazy, we all get to share in the punishment.

You can come up with a better name for it I'm sure but the cutting edge of that tech is known as Super Capacitors. Graphine is the most promising material to make this stuff, but graphine is one of those "too good to be true things."

>Plasma Generator
A wha-? Super heated plasma can make a good radiation sheild, and potentially a physical sheild too in conjunction with a strong magnetic field. NASA is currently working on that. I mean it depends on how "Hard Science Fiction" you want to go but Fusion generators are always a safe bet.

>Plasma generator
It was me and my friend (who are also working on the setting)'s catch all term for any engine that powers a large mechanical vehicle (from small powered suit to starship)
>Fusion generators
If we're talking fusion, what would dangers of a small powered suit having a fusion generator (or a large battleship having many)?

Again, I'm just a writer and not a science person at all. So my knowledge of things is very limited. To add onto what I already have: plasma weaponry has bullets of thermoreactive casing that are wrapped around heated nuclear plasma. This is then fired out of a railgun/gauss gun device. Also, lasers are either stationary ground-to-air/space artillery devices (instead of mobile weaponry)

Graphene is basically monomolecular carbon plates. It does everything.

Fusion means very high temps of hydrogen (mostly) which means hydrogen plasma. It's far less dangerous than a fission based generator.

There's really no reason to have a railgun that fires anything other than solid slugs. What will the plasma do that a mach 10 kinetic penetrator can't? A plasma gun that's semi sensible would be like having a really powerful magnetic field directed out of your gun and firing the (polarized because it's plasma) in a spiraly pattern directly at the target. But that'd be a short ranged weapon, more like a flame thrower that works like a blowtorch.

Funny story, I was stationed in mainland Japan for two years as a Sergeant and used to kick in the doors of my junior Marines to see what figures they had won over the weekend at the arcades and then I'd give them hell about what shit taste they had.
Good times.

I was conscripted too, like some others ITT. There aren't many anime fans in my country, so the only one I found was someone who was watching JoJo (it was late 2012, when the first season was airing). Other than that, I had to pretend I was a normalfag, I watched more football matches than I ever did in the rest of my life.

I also got my first leave near Christmas, and got on the internet for the first time in months, only to see /a/ watching GuP. I was in the armored division.

On a semi-relevant note, I heard tons of conversations about WoW, especially among officers. One of them told me about one incident at the military academy he attended; one of his colleagues had his character farming using a bot, and an elderly officer walked by and saw it.

He exclaimed "The machine's fishing on its own!".

I regret not going into the Navy out of high school. I went to college, got a shit degree, and now I'm stuck in an office job, and will likely be teaching next year. I'm 26, so it's too late for me to do it, but if I could go back in time, I definitely would've gone into the Navy.

Either he likes punishment or he's drinking the Cool-Aid pretty hard. Missions are widely regarded to be sucky, no matter what "faith and character" building face people put on it to rationalize the suck.

A lot of Mission Presidents have a very corporate, results driven attitude, and they require you and your companion to spy on each other in a creepy fashion.

They also strongly discourage you from going home, at times even when this is probably unwise.

I didn't really talk about it, but I only ran into one guy in the army who watched anime that I knew of. I asked him what kind of shows he watched and he said "I've seen every shoe-nen there is"

Then I tried talking to him about JJBA, HnI and one other show I forget which, and he had never heard of any of them. Didn't speak to anyone about anime after that

Yeah I got the two mixed up.
>There's really no reason to have a railgun that fires anything other than solid slugs.
The idea behind the thermoreactive casing and plasma inside is that it would superheat the projectile, causing damage on top of the already-present speed of it being fired out of a railgun.
