Military pride isn't even big around these parts.
Soldiers are given respect, but seeing how poorly the general public received our operations as a part of ISAF during the conflict in Afghanistan, I don't think most regular citizens care particularly for the nation's troops.
As for the idiots joining the army with warped expectations, I blame Hollywood. Ever since being liberated by American forces and receiving Marshall Aid following the second World War, my country has seen the US very favourably and allowed a lot of American culture to take root. Not that this is a bad thing.
I think a lot of young people these days get seriously sidetracked by how army life is portrayed in video games and action-movies. They all seem shocked when they're handed a mop and told that they'll be swabbing the barracks floor for the rest of the afternoon.
We're also seeing an increase in recruits following all the issues we've been having with immigrants from the Middle-East. People are worried about losing national identity due to excessive multiculturalism.
All in all, army life in little oldDenmarkis getting shittier by the minute.

First of all I just want to state that armed forces operate very differently across the globe, so I can only answer in respects to the Danish one.
1. Yeah in the case of the RDA it refers strictly to the use of IFV's and transports. So we have combat vehicles that to the untrained eye would probably look like tanks, but they're not (CV90, Piranhas etc.) So we don't -just- have armored transports, but we don't have true tank elements either.
2. I think this is different from army to army as well. In the RDA a "Brigade" is made up of multiple different elements. The First Brigade of the RDA for example consists of Dragoon Regiments, Guard Hussar Regiments and Tank Companies. So it's larger than a regiment and more versatile.
A regiment in the RDA is small and more specialized.

Armored Infantry is synonymous with Mechanized Infantry in the RDA. I'm Mechanized Infantry, we just call it Armored Infantry around here. I'm translating from Danish on the fly so I apologize if some things seem unclear.

Denmark is small relative to most other nations and while I don't actually know for certain (I haven't spoken much to anybody from the RDA's 1st Brigade, I'm 2nd Brigade), I would imagine that all tactics are standardized.
I know for a fact that the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Armored Infantry receives the same training as 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Infantry.

Different regiments of the RDA have mottos, insignias, anniversaries they celebrate, mascots and regimental belts. I'm afraid I'm not aware of any nicknames that are really noticeable. My regiment is commonly referred to as "GHR's", but that's about it.

I wouldn't exactly say that. It means moulding your character into leadership material. Not being a dickface is a goal, but it's secondary to being an effective leader and making sure you project a good image to the public. PR is very important these days.

Different regiments wear different belts that identifies them. Essentially, what regiment you are part of. Anniversaries would be different battle honours, because 1 brigade may have fought at battle a, but 2 brigade may have fought at battle b, and they celebrate their own battles respectively.

The belt is a part of our dress uniform. We are required to wear dress uniform at all times except for when we're off-duty or drilling. It's essentially like wearing a suit when you go into office, if that makes sense. So the belt is only really worn during clerical work, meetings, celebrations and inspections.
Uniform policy is strict, but of course all things are within reason. If we come wading into the barracks covered in mud and sweat after having finished a drill, it's not like the officers will immediately start berating us for not being proper.
However if you show up in a tank-top and baggy pants for a meeting with a superior officer, you better believe you're in for an earful and a punishment.

Yeah America tends to emphasize cool tech and stuff over the quality of its soldiers. The media as well tries REALLY HARD to emphasize how courageous and patriotic and heroic our soldiers are. An action flick about Bengazi is about to come out soon by Michael Bay and it shows the soldiers there as some sort of self-sacrificing matyrs. Just wish there was more ways to read up on the military without misinformation (mostly because I barely know anyone who's in the army, and also because a lot of them are redneck hoodlums)

Good luck with your book anon. Make sure it has mobile suits in it. Every engineer I know who watches anime with me wants to make power armor in some way shape or form. I want to make Gundams, an old highschool budy wants to make Fallout style power armor, and more than a few guys want to build 40K suits and take genetic modifications, and we're crazy enough to make it happen, some how, if we managed to get around all the reliablity issues and power inefficencies.

Army policies have changed a lot over the past five years when it comes to punishments. I saw punishments the most during basic at the stage where people still weren't quite taking army life seriously and pretty much all of it involved "getting dropped" (Doing physical exercise as punishment).
Officers aren't allowed to abuse lower-ranking members of the army as much as they once were, but they will still definitely shout at you, get right up in your face and can make your life really damn frustrating.
Broad punishments aren't uncommon in my unit. As in if one person fucks up or is lazy, we all get to share in the punishment.

Again, I'm just a writer and not a science person at all. So my knowledge of things is very limited. I have a background in IT, electrical/computer engineering, information science and CS. Mostly stuff like firmware programming and previously I worked on datacenters.
I hear that working in military on tech is a good way to get into defense, and as much as I love working with computers, everything consumer is in silicon valley and sucks. Defense, on the other hand, is not far from home (i'm in LA.)
What's a good branch to enter into? How do you get a job working with tech in the military?

Fusion means very high temps of hydrogen (mostly) which means hydrogen plasma. It's far less dangerous than a fission based generator.
There's really no reason to have a railgun that fires anything other than solid slugs. What will the plasma do that a mach 10 kinetic penetrator can't? A plasma gun that's semi sensible would be like having a really powerful magnetic field directed out of your gun and firing the (polarized because it's plasma) in a spiraly pattern directly at the target. But that'd be a short ranged weapon, more like a flame thrower that works like a blowtorch.
