Hiei and Yusuke both faced demon kings in the same round of the tournament and they both got rekt. The only time Yusuke is significantly stronger than the others is when he gets Genkai's spirit orb, and when he first comes back to life as a demon.
This is another reason I love Gash Bell. Brago was a rival done right.

Happened in Fairy Tail with Gray. He was Natsu's rival in the guild, and then he got shafted for Gajeel. Thankfully, the mangaka seems to have seen the error of his ways and made Gray the rival again instead of Vegeta 2.0.
