Just finished Comet Lucifer. Miyazaki is right. Modern anime writers can't write humans. All they can write are glib facsimiles of over worn clichés. Every piece of dialogue in that show or character motivation could be used in the myriad other shows that aired before, and you wouldn't notice. How was this one of the best amine of its season?

I like to pick up one or two mediocre shows a season and watch the tranwreck with /a/. This has been total garbage since episode 2, and everyone knows it. It bombed in sales, the mech designs were ugly, plot was stupid, girls were lame, etc. etc.
All and all though, as forgettable as it will be, I enjoyed watching it with /a/, if only we could groan and complain about it together. As regards to what Miyazaki said and you using this shit as an example, let me remind you of Sturgen's Law

Anime and manga seems to be mostly created for visual impact.
It's why you can, maybe, get slightly better quality writing in anime and manga based on LN or VN. If the source material survives adaptation.
Problem is also a lot of it doesn't seem to be made with a clear story in mind. Like authors start out with an idea, but depending on popularity, they can stretch or cut short their story so you get something aborted or diluted.

My impression is also most authors of LNs are pretty much required to have a few tropes and cliches in their stories if they ever have even a shred of hope being successful, which is basically 1) The MC must be a male teenager 2) He is surrounded by girls 3) The girls are sexualized in some way, maybe not absurd amounts but enough for the artist pages 4) There must be less male characters then female. Operating in those guidelines is really restricting.
Of course, thats just the ones that got big, I'm sure theres dozens not like that, but every LN I've heard about or adaption I've seen have had elements of all four.

Miyazaki was talking about drawing, not writing. He believes most young animators are learning to draw/animate by copying anime instead of studying real life.
This is true for all aspects of anime. You can see it when you look at most current characters when compared to how they would have been in the past. Where in the past they looked derived from humans, and you could tell the person drawing had observed real life, now they are the derivative of a derivative. Exceptionally talented illustrators and writers still do great work, but the moment you leave a job to someone else they resort to a copy and paste method.
