So is this shit worth finishing? I'm on episode 10 and it feels like I'm watching a dating sim.
Do they ever go deeper into social conflicts within the game or expand on why the fuck they're stuck in it in the first place, or is it just one big excuse to throw a bunch of characters in a fantasy world back drop and have them blush at each other and say cute things?

Disagree immensely on the hate part. People as of late seem to be writing off the hate posts as nothing more than contrarian shit posts, but I feel that this show's popularity is completely unwarranted.
I won't even go ahead and say watch the first half like most people do. Even from the start, the premise doesn't serve as anything more than a means to have modern teenage characters in a fantasy world. While the setting isn't bad to look at, there isn't much more to it than colorful backdrops scattered throughout the show's run. Unfortunately, the setting is really the only thing worthwhile about this series, and even that is nothing more than a typical location with the "video game" factor plastered on.
To put it bluntly, there isn't a single character worth writing home about. Everything is so by-the-books about this shit. You have Kirito, the edgy wish-fulfillment swordsman special loner shit that exists for the sole purpose of appealing to the socially awkward fags that sit around watching anime and pretending to be good at video games all day. This whole "don't underestimate the loner underdog, he's actually really cool" thing is just a way to appeal to the typical mouth breather that watches this shit. His love interest isn't much better, either, being as bland and copy-paste as they come, but serving as typical 15 year old boner bait like in most anime. No one else is of interest, really.
As for plot, the first several episodes seem to do nothing but emphasize personal struggle and loss for Kirito with the same themes and examples on repeat. Then shit hits the fan as the two lovers fuck like bunnies and move out to the country, and the shitty kid happens. There are people who kid themselves into believing that this show explores mature themes. Ultimately, it's just two kids pretending to be something they're not, and it only gets progressively more awkward as it goes on.
Don't bother with the second half. Most can agree on that.

My only real gripe with the series is that, if you don't understand a particular technology and don't have the resources to research it, then just leave the details unsaid. How the NervGear worked was really plot-irrelevant, and by coming up with the BS microwave technobabble, he ended up introducing some internal and external plot holes that really could have been avoided.

But to answer to your previous question. Yes, it gets a hell lot better towards the end. Masterpiece material, especially the Fairy arc. Make sure you watch this until the end and I mean to the very end otherwise you'll regret it. Trust me.
