"Scary"? Honestly no, I don't think there is an anime that exists that can give you a full-on panic attack, but that's the case for almost every medium really.

There is some very unnerving horror anime if you look hard enough, though. Pic related.

Saya no Uta could work, but a purely horror anime would have a hard time getting on the air in the first place. How the fuck would you convince them to do it if it doesn't meet the trope quota? Even Higurashi was moeshit before it even got adapted.

Shinreigari during the abandoned Hospital part and during some apparitions of the giant ghost is the closest I've ever seen to an actually scary anime. Also, a good series in general with 10/10 sound effects (which is crucial to any horror film/series).

horror is much better in manga than anime since scenes are immediate and fast without being drawn out like in anime.

like you have the current panel look like everything is cool and normal then next page there's suddenly some dark shadow hiding behind the corner.

Zekkyou Gakkyuu is a pretty good and scary horror manga for example.

I thought that scenario was well replicated in Higurashi actually. There's a big slice of life and easygoing rural segment at the beginning of every chapter. The horror is amplified by the "what the fuck I trusted you" feeling. You think you're in a different genre before it hits. But then the anime doesn't have time for that.

I just don't know how you'd be silly enough to misse one of the most highly regarded anime movies and instead chose to watch a spin off series based on that movie.

>>
>>135956054
those work because they're lifelike while we're pretty aware that anime looks nowhere near reality.

the best an anime of horror could do is make you feel uneasy and unsettled rather than being scared.

like I guess, corpse party is the only anime I know thats close to horror but still dont really scare you.

>>
I've never seen a scary anime. But Araki does have a lot of body horror in JoJo, and then there's good ol' Junji Ito. Manga can be scary, but anime isn't as affective.
>>
>>135954302
This, it was genuinely fucking disturbing but no "BOO!" kind of stuff except for that part where Fuminori appears out of nowhere when Koji is looking through Ogai's house

>>
>>135956519

>>
>>135956319

>>
>>135956536
Araki needs to learn how to draw blood first. He great at triggering my trypophobia though.
>>
I thought Shigurui was pretty damn creepy even for not being specifically a horror anime/manga.
>>
>>135955963
to add on this, it works well on manga because of the black and white design that makes the shading of the monsters look more creepy than ever, while the anime version would make them look pretty generic type of monster.
>>
>>135950085
Jesus Christ anon
>>
Kowabon at the very least tries to be scary.
>>
There's much more scary manga than anime. But, to be fair almost no medium has genuinely scary examples, unless you're a child.
>>
>>135956654
the point of the story is just a "what if there were no supernatural elements" and yuki was the only one who could create the setting, as haruhi would never do it.

its really less of connection type of thing though people could see it as that, its mostly a story to point out how its much more fun with haruhi messing things up instead of everything is normal.
>>
>>135956321
That's a shitty argument because most people actually don't get spooked because "oh wew there r real ppl in de movie".
Some elements that end up scaring people:
-unexpected loud scenes accompanied by disturbing imagery (this is what passes as "scare" for a lot of plebs)
-something that taps into a phobia or enduring fear
-investment into the story and characters
-powerful ending
-uncertainty until the conclusion, or even after the conclusion
-suggestion ("Berberian Sound Studio" is a movie about the making of a giallo, and shows no disturbing scenes from the movie yet manages to be highly disturbing)
-carefully constructed antagonist(s)
-gore, but done in an effective way

>>135956480
>all "major" manga end up getting translated though
What you call "major" manga is what caters to the largest possible denominator. Horror as a genre, despite being popular, is not and has never been that widespread. There might not be a big horror manga scene going on, but the amount that has been translated among that is still tiny. It's like with Mahjong manga; the scene is relatively big, but only a very small number of works are being translated and this is done only by specialist groups (except for Saki).
>>
>>135956339
What version of the novel is that?

I think part of the reason manga is scarier than anime is that you read it online one page at a time, and you have to wait for the page to load. It can jumpscare you. Like that Roach with the huge eyes I see posted here in spooky threads.

There's also the fact that there aren't many horror anime that aren't shorts, whereas in manga you have many works that do micro-stories, short stories or long stories.
But jumpscares are rarely memorable and if it's about making jumpscares then a medium with moving pictures and sound beats a medium with still pictures and no sound any day.

Funny story with Higurashi. I was in the army and I had a late service guarding the guns (don't know the English word for it). I was alone in a relatively empty place with a few guys. Then in Higurashi there was that scene with the rain where Rena was standing outside. Lighting bold in the anime, then a fucking loud thunder struck near where I was, shaking everything around. You can guess that I was scared shitless.

I had a month or so suffering from sleep paralysis as well, with all those dark hallucinations so I'm not scarred that easily anymore
>>
>>135949686

IMO it's hard for a non interactive medium to be scary. Most horror anime/TV/movies are fairly meh compared to a half decent horror game.
>>
anime cannot be scary because of the innate disconnect you get from how unrealistic the characters look
