At this point, I have seen enough Japanese performances to accept this is probably what Japanese acting was about. Japan probably hang on to their live theatrical traditions a little longer than most. TV, film, anime, all over-act by default. It shouldn't be considered an accident, but 100% intentional.

I resent this line. "Acting" is what society has agreed upon which facial/body gestures constitutes as good acting. For every society it looks different.
This doesn't extend only to acting, but to daily life as well. For example in Japan you can wave your hand in front of your face when you disagree with something or make an X-sign with your arms. The West doesn't do that. Facial/body gestures are something you grow into and culturally dependent.
