I read a series of books called the Coldfire Trilogy and holy shit one of the characters in it is just as annoying and as pathetic as this guy.
What makes it worse is he killed Marida who is a superior pilot and a superior character in every way.

I...like him. He was a dynamic character who started as a goody two shoe but despite his best intention he was pushed around and looked down by everyone. All happen while the naive MC whose life he saved (and remember mc nearly got both of them killed) seem to get praise and invitation by every major player, including his love interest. In the end he give up on playing nice and decide to use the power he could got his hands on to bring peace to galaxy himself, all those moral high ground "chosen one" be damned.
I think he should sacrifice himself and die though. It is somewhat unfair that Marida died and he got it easy at the end.

If you look closely it was the lasers from the Feddies that were causing most of the collateral damage. She was the last person who'd want to blow up a colony. You can see how she panicked when she hit the reactor.
