PRESENT DAY

>>135913493
Too many faggots are getting onto this series. Abe is becoming somewhat entry level in a LotGH way. People are new enough to realise they have a long way to go and use objectively good series as a prop to pretend they don't have shit taste.
THe only difference is that LotGH has 100+ eps and thus wards away the weak of will and low on time.
Lain on the other hand is only hard to watch if you're quick enough to follow. Any old retard can sit through it not understanding a thing about the narrative or any of the several deeper meanings to the series.

Absolutely tragic.

I think it had something to do with how the Wired was causing people's perceptions of things to leak into the real world.

There was more than one Lain because there were people with different perceptions of her, and there was an alien because of the conspiracies surrounding the origins of the Wired and the Roswell incident.

I think.
>>
>>135918304
If you actually read the interviews, the creators didn't clarify much at all. They answered like two common questions.
>>
>>135918335
A couple episodes before it there's a montage of people gossiping on the internet. One girl says something like "help! there's a kid in a striped sweater spying on me from my door!". The alien is a reference to that because the wired and real worlds are coming together. It is an alien because of the nature of the infodump's initial content, which has to do with area 51 and Majestic 12. Majestic 12 turns out, however, as told by the narrator, to be a forgery, and it's all revealed to have been a way to set you up for information about Vannevar Bush.

>>135918583
Don't forget that Lain can also be interpreted as the story of someone suffering mental illness, the alien could have just been part of a delusion.
>>
>>135918583
What a needlessly convoluted mess. Why do people think this is good writing?
>>
>>135917189
> Abe is becoming somewhat entry level in a LotGH way
Lain's always been more entry-level than LotGH, what are you saying?
>>
>>135918683
But it is good writing, it's non-linear and intentionally confusing, but that's completely intentional and part of the story.
>>
>>135918683
It's one of the weaker aspects of lain imo. They didn't pace out the story properly so you get a massive info dump to push the story.
>>
>>135918683
Because it is.
>>
>>135918683
>>135918785
I don't see the problem there. You just need to stay focused and you'll get everything that happens because it's always explained through some context earlier on.
It's a nice change of pace from other anime and media that just flat out explains everything so often until everyone that didn't even bother really watching it understood it

See the problem with threads about any work that is philosophical or has any form of deep (not on the surface) meaning, is that there's always those one group of assholes that's like "oh yea sure it was deep, but it wasn't THAT deep". Seriously can someone please name off some of these works that people seem to imply that go "so much deeper", and peer into our very existence and minds in a way that makes ivy league psychology professors jealous, and gives a currently near incomprehensible analysis of our psyches that truly wont be understood until years later and society can look back at it in retrospect. Cause the last author I can remember who did that was HP Lovecraft.

Nothing against you I'm just sick of people who pretend anything with any form of depth is "obviously surface level, not deep enuff".
>>
>>135918775
>>135918796
What's good about it? It doesn't make me feel or reflect on anything and it doesn't contribute much to the meat of the story which is about Lain so why does all that shit even have to be there?
>>
>>135918775
Stories with metaphor and allegory seem to make good writing for me. So is lain an allegory about wasting your life by investing meaning & depth to a bunch of chuuni-grade conspiracies?

The "it's not really that deep" posts are mostly meant as replies against people who claim that an anime is "pretentious" and "hipster garbage" and then say that "people only pretend to like the anime because nobody really get's it".
When in fact it's like you say, the philosophy explored in these anime is pretty simple, in fact pretty much all of philosophy is just simple concepts.
>>
>>135919062
But doesn't literally everyone who's put some thought in know what NGE's about? Hell I'd say the hidden meanings are even easier to get to than in Lain.

NGE is much much easier to understand than SEL. You have to be a NGE fanboy to think the opposite.
>>
>present day

>>
>>135918683
Not really. While I agree that the writing has issues, this is just a simple reference to a past event along with an integration into the known plot, and an infodump that stays atmospherically consistent with the tone of the series.
>>
>>135919360
I'd say that both is equally easy to understand but you get the story of NGE much earlier than that of SEL

Lain isn't just about the story, (In the anime version, the semi-deity Lain resolves the conflict created by the meddling of psycho-technology researcher Masami Eiri), it's more like a multimedia franchise that's about an experience and a concept, that's not really unusual for artsy films (think Koyaanisqatsi, Angel's Egg, El Topo), but it is unusual for a broadcast TV series.

It touches on epistemology and perception, the concept of omniscience, theories of communication (watch how Lain interacts or fails to interact with different characters), and raises questions about mental illness (especially in the game version of the story, but in the anime too the possibility of multiple personality disorder and hallucination are obvious).

>>
>>135919481
An infodump isn't a good thing though, especially when it's entirely superfluous. Anime writers need to get it through their heads that just because something seems cool doesn't mean it belongs in the story. It's a fact that Lain would be a better show without that Roswell ayy lmao shit.
>>
>>135918889
I understand the story.

The writers didn't actually know how move the story to where they wanted it, so they ended up rushing the pacing towards the end (source, one of the interviews with trio, you can probably just google it and it'll pop up). You could say however that they made the best of a bad situation, the info dump is presented in a creative way that fits the series.
>>
>>135919526
>>135919664
Although I'd attribute the hallucinations more so to the direct action of the Knights than Lain's own "illness". I tend to discard the schizophrenia interpretations in favor of a more literal interpretation of what's happening. I think Lain's problems deal more with introversion and loneliness.

I actually thought the alien/conspiracy stuff was appropriate, it tied in with all of the rumors floating around on the net (an accurate reflection of the real internet's love of conspiracy theories), as well as the KIDS system. Helps shake the viewer out of complacency as well.
>>
ITT: Nobody actually understands the plot
>>
>>135919677
The infodump was a creative and non-intrusive element. The info about Eiri and the history of multimedia and wired communication/theory are necessary. The way the infodump did it was effective and grabs you just as a reveal does. If it were just a character talking about it, it wouldn't have come across as atmospheric or interesting. Just listen to the music.
>>
>>135919772
That could have been explained without bringing Roswell into it. There is nothing about Lain's character that necessitates that specific detail.
>>
>>135919814
>>135919109
>>
Anyone else ever consider Cyberia isn't a real location but rather a sort of "chat room" within the wired?

>>
>>135920050
It had started merging with Lain's existence in the real world. The Knights were able to mess with the real world before Eiri's introduction in episode 9.
>>
>>135919526
>theories of communication (watch how Lain interacts or fails to interact with different characters)
This kind of shit doesn't need to be "touched" on or deliberately written into the show. When a good writer writes dialogue and character interactions they are realistic enough that they can be analyzed like that regardless of what it's about or if the author intended to have those kinds themes in there.
>>
>>135920048
Where do you think we are?
>>
>>135920135

That Lain is poorly written show and the writers themselves didn't understand all the philosophical shit they were trying to explore so trying to analyze it is pointless, kinda like the Matrix.

Lain is possibly the penultimate "thinking man's anime." The more you watch it the more you understand, and that's wonderful. Lain is a cutie too.

Meme nothing. Lain definitely rewards deeper analysis.
