It's sort of odd in that it takes place in an alternate version of gundams UC timeline. Its basically UC but the author had the go ahead to run with his own ideas whether they fit in the timeline or not.
Essentially though, all you need to know is that the Earth federation and a group of its colonies are at war that has killed about half the human population and are currently at the tail end of the war and the Earth Federation forces are pushing towards Zeon's home colonies. The series starts just before the battle of A Baoa Qu which in the original series is where the war ended.In thunderbolt it technically does too, but a huge chunk of Zeons military says "Fuck that" and keeps the war going.
Oh, and the debris field they are fighting in is one of the sides (clusters of colonies, Zeon is Side 3) destroyed at the start of the war.
