Let's be frank. The real main reason some people prefer the 1999 version is the filler, but they don't want to admit it because it's filler. Really fucking good filler on par with the One Piece's G-8 arc, but still filler.
There's no real shame in liking the ship mini-arc or the stowaway plotline, but don't go beating around the bush.
