So I just watcher Rebuild of Evangelion 1.11 and 2.22. I thought that 1.11 was okay and 2.22 was pretty good. Mari was shit thought I`m finally getting 3.33 when it is released next month. So is 3.33 any good at all and will it be better than 2.22?

So what? It's still a garbage plot. Even if my favorite character was showcased I wouldn't be happy if the rest was vomit. Kaworu dies anyways and they both act completely out of character until it's too late. It is by far Anno's biggest disaster and confirmed the Rebuilds as a simple cash cow milking.

>>135802574
Color correcting? More like color ruining.
Leave it the way it was intended to be.
They obviously chose it to look this way for a reason.
>>
>>135801627
>>135802574
If that is how it looks they wanted it to have the purple cast when they made it. The cells were drawn normally and it was color-timed to be that way.

>They obviously chose it to look this way for a reason.
>they wanted it to have the purple cast when they made it.

Yet the broadcast version doesn't have such aggressive color tinting.

This argument is based on a flawed premise: The color casting isn't necessarily a photographer (animation) director's choice, it could also be produced by poor (re)mastering.
If you have checked RX or even sephirotic's take on this matter, you would have realized most of the color casts of the renewal which aren't present on the original broadcast version, are likely not a director's choice because they are fairly inconsistent. There are exceptions, of course, but that purple cast is clearly not one of those since in the following scenes the color shifts to other unbalanced tones. Just look at this red Kaworu.
Remastering for anime BDs leaves a lot to be desired compared to high budged western movie productions were photography directors actually have proper control of every single scene of the exact color grade they want it to be.
I'm not saying Sephirotic's work is on a professional level either, but the BD has some pretty inexcusable flaws presented to us for us to fan at ridiculous price to what it offer. Only encoders can kinda of fix them for us.
>>
>>135803789
I still think it looks better with purple when he's going down to terminal dogma, it works well with the glow around him.
>>
>>135797968
>So is 3.33 any good at all and will it be better than 2.22?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA no.
>>
>>135803789
But that isn't your call to say what is "fixed". Anyone can go in and just set an average white balance on the video and claim they did a better job even if it was never intended to have zero color cast. Every time they make a transfer, tv broadcast, home video release, laser disc, dvd, and now blu ray it will be different sometimes more sometimes less. Back when they actually made anime by going from cell to film they were using printer lights and so it was always going to be a more inexact science between versions but those flaws are what the finished product is for that transfer. It doesn't take a DP to be on set to do a best light if that is all they were trying to do on every frame. However that is not the case for the eva series and they easily have the money and time to make it look how they wanted. The only thing I would think can easily be complained about is the one episode they didn't have the negatives for so they just used the old tape masters.

In ep 24 you have weird alien creature and large very heavily colored red and purple evas interacting in an area where you have red(orange)color lcl lake. The color would be all over the place in that environment if it were real. For animation it also makes sense for it to change but since I didn't make it I wouldn't feel comfortable just saying here is how it should definitively be.
>>
>>135804210
That is in front of Lilith, when he is going down, the shift is slightly red, not purple, sometimes even green, it's not consistent either. The animated glow effect is a netural light, the cast is on the entire frame, not only around Kaworu.
>>
>>135804592
No, when Kaworu goes angel mode he distinctly forms a glow effect around him, to the minute he starts levitating to the minute he gets decapitated, he is glowing.
It's even mentioned in the storyboards and scripts.
>>
>>135804559
>and they easily have the money and time to make it look how they wanted.
Yet they provided us a shitty half-assed SD upscale full of haloing for episode 16 while an interpositive and even a 1080i version was around. Doesn't sound to me they put much effort to present the best possible remaster for us.
Well, I don't know about episode 24, but as from what I have read on sephirotic's blog about episode 19, sometimes it is easy to realize that the levels and colors are clearly wrong and are not simply a "choice". Because, between scene-cuts, by simply removing a layer of cell animation, the tint becomes darker and yellower. They could have really corrected that, but it is conically present on episode 19.Which proves they didn't give all that much care in presenting a controlled remaster at all. The inconsistencies are all over the place.

Yes, but you are assuming the glow was purple, which is false, that purple cast is particularly to that scene, it is not present and the same color of other shots of kaworu floating down the car line .

Color correcting won't remove the glow, because it has a neutral color which affect luma, not chroma.
>>
>>135805031
What about the scene where Kaji shows Lilith to Misato?
Was there a purple hue there as well?
That would prove it was really intentional or not.

Same with the scenes of Rei and Lilith.

Don't even need to go as far as episode 15, on the proper episode 24, on other shot, the glow of kaworu has a different color.

When the show was made they weren't doing these glow effects in a computer so things would be imperfect. The work is going to have these defects both in effects and general hand drawn weirdness. This is why the rebuilds and all anime have switched to using digital tools both for the money and ability to be more consistent. It is why Disney went with CAPS and were able to become a leader again in animation in the late 80s 90s. I don't know I agree but people always claim they like the hand drawn works which had tons of defects that everyone seems to forget. Since it is restoring a work that was made in the 90s you have two choices go in and George Lucas Special Edition it to make it look as amazing as it could be or leave the fact that it was imperfect and leave it that way because it was made by people and at the time this is what it looked like flaws and all.

I'm not going to say that they did a perfect job or that they shouldn't have had more care taken in making the BD. I'm just saying that going in and white balancing to make it as "clean" as possible is not the right way either.
>>
>>135805513
This.
Color correcting just takes out the feel and naturalness of what is a 90s Anime.
I personally am a fan of the purple, it's not as if it changes every single frame, it's for the entire duration of the dogma scene.
Whether it was intentional or not, I think it works.
>>
>>135805513
>what George Lucas did
You mean, ruining the Star War franchise with shitty artificial pointless 3D Banthas, Jar Jar Binks and singing aliens?

Also, back in the analogical era, they adjusted white balance through the light source as they photographed the cells, and they could very well add different color tints using analogical filters, kinda like cellophane. In fact they did exactly that. Asuka's dream scenes and the hospital scenes, where everything is blueish in the original, were probably done like that.
And the hell train scene, which is orange, too.
>I'm just saying that going in and white balancing to make it as "clean" as possible is not the right way either.
This is from sephirotic's new episode 19.He didn't white balanced everything. I think he is aware of what he is doing. By the way, RX also color corrected episode 19 manually in a similar fashion to sephirotic.
>>
>>135805730
But the purple is only on that 5 second scene, just look at this image:
>>135805340
You can see how it is purple on one scene, blue in other, white in other (lillith's face") and even yellowish on the bottom close of Kaworu's face!
It's not consistent! Different from the hell trains scene here: >>135805887
Which I personally like the orange cast.
That's the main issue.
>>
>>135805887
>back in the analogical era, they adjusted white balance through the light source
Yes those were printer lights. You could adjust three lights a red, green, and blue light to make a change in the final color. You would have numbered knobs to adjust the intensity of each light. In order to see how the finished work actually looked you would have to film the whole scene with all of the cells and develop the film.
Things today are much easier and you can go back and fix things with little work which could take days or weeks before. If you wanted to reuse footage like eva often did it wasn't just copying and pasting a file they would have to either reshoot the film(likely) or go back to the cells(unlikely). Which meant reused material often would look different as it was a different quality. Footage with more layers had technical problems that no longer exist. Watch old disney movies and it is very easy to spot the animation cells which is moving and replaced vs background cells which were filmed for multiple frames.

I think 3.33 is the only good Rebuild but I'm in the minority.

I hate 1.11 and 2.22 because besides the very end of 2.22, they're just carbon copies of the show, but worse in every possible way. 3.33 might be stupid but at least it's not like I'm watching a repeat of the show with a bunch of Lucas special edition scenes, it's more like a terrible retcon.
