I just hope this show doesn't take itself too seriously. I thought Kyoukai no Kanata, which is very similar in style and theme, found a strikingly good balance between seriousness of the plot line, and character interactions, and the cuteness and personability of the characters. First episode was good, but I have to believe Kyoukai will end up being better overall.

I will never understand why people say things like this, or that Hyouka is boring, or whatever. Kyoani shows have much more going on at a given moment than most other anime. The dialog is hardly ever superfluous, characters develop in both subtle and obvious ways, and the visuals are actually used to convey mood and symbolism properly rather than being set dressing for the vocal exposition like with most shitty LN adaptations.
Honestly I'm mostly talking about K-on, Hyouka and UFO here, but most of their other shows aren't bad either. Even within the first two episodes of K-on, Yui develops more than most characters do in a whole season, and it's not like the show stays stationary after that. K-on is a simple story with great character development. Three whole years go by during the show, and the characters change as much as one would expect from kids at that age, and yet people keep saying K-on has no story.
