Finally got around to watching Evangelion and I'm really curious as to why exactly this show is hailed as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, anime of all time? So much about it sucked.

Each fight in Eva was very well put together, managing to build a lot of tension within a very small time-frame. I'm not sure how much mecha you've seen, but the fights are probably the one thing Eva gets praised for unanimously. Complain about anything else you want, but if you hated the fights in Eva, you are a colossal fuckwit.

Eva consistently has development of character, their relationships, and the overarching story in these boring "monster of the week" episodes.
Shinji actually changes quite a bit throughout the series, but his resistance to growth in episode 12 was very well done in how the expectation was built up and then defied.

Did you literally miss the noticeable change after episode 6? Misato even explicitly mentions it in case you're an idiot. He does not complain once until episode 17 outside mentioning he'll obviously have to dive in the lava during Magma Driver. In that episode itself, you have Shinji diving in without a suit to save Asuka's life without hesitation. It's a moment that changes the dynamic of their relationships quite a bit.

Subs and dubs are pretty even in terms of quality but if you lean more towards dubs/subs go for your preference. Dragon Ball is comedic while Dragon Ball Z is more serious. If you hate filler DBZ Kai is the way to go. It's basically an abridged version of the series with a more faithful script and imo the dub for that totally blows he sub out of the water.

Asuka suddenly appears next to him, and he actually doesn't notice, then when he turns his head he sees the ghostly Rei apparition and Asuka. Thinking she is just another illusion he chokes her, but when she touches his cheek, he realizes she is real and breaks down crying.

Watch the entire series, then watch Death/Rebirth and EoE. After that, take a week to think about what you've just seen, then watch Eva again.
This show isn't something that you just watch and think "YAY IT WAS SO GOOD!," it's something that you learn more about every time you watch it. You can go to the Wiki to learn even more stuff.
Once you've read the wiki and watched all of the movies, go watch the Rebuild series. You'll soon see that the Rebuilds are related to the entire storyline of the original series, and then you'll have even more to think about.
Once you've seen all the moving images, pick up the Evangelion manga, which is written based on the series by someone totally different. You'll learn even more about the characters. And then there are the games and the offshoot manga...
TL:DR there's a lot of stuff you don't know anything about, and to judge something that's expanded in so many different ways through your incomplete knowledge of the series is thoroughly ignorant.
Come back with an actual complaint rather than "WOW THIS SUCKS" and maybe you'll get better conversation.

It may not be for everyone. Honestly, when judged against modern anime, Evangelion can seem slow and boring. But it's a literal masterpiece, and its continued popularity and discussion should show you that.
As a series, movies included, Evangelion offers as much as you're willing to look for in it. It's a show that touches on many interesting concepts and challenges the viewer to see the character flaws and strange situations in themselves and those around them. In its time, it was something to behold.
If you're just looking for a radical robot anime, watch Diebuster 2 or Gurren Lagann. Those are great, as they are a bit more action-packed and have more fantastic, less realistic characters.
Evangelion is a show about people, at its core. If you don't care about the people, well, :^)

OP again, I'm about halfway through End of Evangelion now and I gotta say I'm actually really enjoying it so far. What pissed me off so much about the anime is how it felt like an action robot show that would delve into something deeper while still giving staying true to it's roots. Instead it pretty much totally abandoned the action element to give some incredibly stupid and drawn out conclusion about "just being yourself". It's not a bad message, but it's pretty simple and the show came off as awfully pretentious by making it seem like something so much bigger. I'm liking the movie because the action's still there(I also really wanted to see some kind of fighting between Nerv and the Japanese military/govt and I'm glad that it's in here.) while still, as far as I can tell, retaining some of the psychological themes it touched on in the show. I'll try to come back and give my thoughts after I'm finished with the movie.

OP here to take back this thread. Just finished the movie and I gotta say, I'm impressed. I grew pretty confused around the middle but had a bit of at the end and I think I get what this movie was trying to sayRei and Kaworu represent, like they said, the hope in Shinji's heart that he can connect with others and that he can find happiness as long as he is comfortable with himself and his reality and accepts life's challenges for what they are. However in the end he chokes and kills(?) Asuka because of he has yet to accept himself and/or his reality and hurts her like he hurts others because of this, destroying one of the few chances of actual happiness he had and why the film ends simply with Asuka calling him disgusting for thisAt least that's how I interpreted it, I'll need to sleep on it before I can make a totally clear conclusion. Anyway, great movie and very satisfying ending to a series I appreciate a bit more(but still think is a little overrated).

Good to hear. Forgive my initial ignorance, I was more pissed than I should have been about the show and was to quick to judge before seeing the movie. It was just rather frustrating expecting something so great and although I still think the show itself could have been better, I do appreciate that the creator decided to make something so ambitious and that it did still make me think. Definitely check out the Rebuilds. They add more depth to the series, and are more akin to EoE than the original series(even though the first movie...well, you'll see). Sadly the series isn't finished yet, with the 4th movie slated to come out ????, but watching those will make you current with the core lore, and will bring up many more interesting questions and possibilities.

Whenever I think of Anno, his debut masterpiece Gunbuster always comes to mind first, and easily makes up for and blunder made after the fact. It carries his style, but doesn't have any of the frivolous extra baggage that I think made Eva no-so-great.

I must be missing something here but I've come to understand it as being abused and/or controlled by someone of the opposite gender and just accepting it. Although a great deal of the frustration was towards Shinji for being so passive about it(although that is in character) it just seemed annoying the writers made it a point to have women, especially Asuka, treat him like shit. Also I agree that a character doesn't have to be a total saint to be likable, but if they don't feel relevant to the plot than they are unlikable due to their uselessness and seemingly unnecessary inclusion in the story. But even if a character is relevant, if they're an obnoxious cunt like Asuka was than they're still unlikable(subjective). After watching the movie I have now come to appreciate the show and its characters a lot more though.

The only issue I find with this is that, once the impacts start occurring, it's very difficult for an Eva virgin to understand what's going on, much less thejump in time from 2.0 to 3.0.
While they are prettier and more action-packed, the films lose their meaning without the backdrop of Eva and EoE, at least in my experience.

The manga has its ow faults
Though it did fix the inconsistencies in the anime by introducing Kaworu earlier, Killing off Toji and making Shinji some less of a pussy, it also replaced asuka's role with rei; making her the main heroine. Asuka is just a minor character throughout most of the mnaga.
This would've been acceptable if not for the fact that manga went for the same EoE end. so Shinji suddenly liking Asuka came out shallow
