What is the general opinion on Overlord?
I just watched the show and I'm reading the light novels right now.My little brother found out about it before me and liked it, too. So proud of him.

I really liked it, the last arc felt like it came out of nowhere though and seemed out of place. The MC being a giant skeleton god and the other characters being extremely entertaining was the best thing about it.

The only actual things to stay from the mmo as mechanics are the fortress/guild management system as far as I know. The rest is disabled (or not carried over) and people using their powers have to use their mind to imagine a skill use and its variables with their "mind" in New World.
On the same note I wonder how chaotic it has to be with Ainz and his minions, since the summoner/pawn is a two-way relationship, mental link between both and in 7-9th volumes Ainz is already commanding hundreds of not-dumb-low-level minions.

He is way too eager to use them and we don't know how many types there are or how many he has left so author can just bullshit up more by convenient plot reasons.

He's got minions who can manage that. Albedo handles most of the secretary work so Ainz even said that he doesn't have much to do besides his secret acting training. Also given that he can't experience intense emotion its impossible for him to break down mentally. He also was hailed as a formidable commander and skilled player when the game was just a MMO so even without his treasure trove or crazy skills he'd still be pretty powerful.

The cash shop items are like a unknown chekhov's gun, they're introduced but not to a big degree due their variability and author can too easily pull out them when plot so requires as modifiers and whatnot.
The Twenty one-use super uniques are a decent kind of asspull, even if pulled out suddenly during a crisis, they have been introduced as a category and you know they're one-time use albeit extremely powerful. It would be stupid if said item would have no effect or it landed on his left hand after he used and made it respawn with his right hand.

If he does pull out some ridiculous shit that lets him squeak by where he would normally die like a bitch I'll complain too, but for now I'm fine with the p2w items as they are only adding flavor to the series.

Generally speaking, minion master builds tend to be quite bad in most games.
Though in all fairness, the universal weakness of minion masters might not exist in Yggdrasil.
That weakness being that of AI.
If one could make custom behavioral patterns for the AI to follow, then they would be quite powerful when used correctly.
Such a function could have been possible in Yggdrasil, making MM builds viable.

Imagine you are in a game with active PvP, you are continuously hunted down, and one day you meet up with a few ppl that happen to grp up to prevent getting banged daily. You party with them since then. Then you found out that the are all RP builds, only you are geared toward PvP.
Will you leave them? Or ask them to switch? Chances are, you still roll with them, since they are the only ones you can trust.
Momonga is a RP built, but the others didn't mind since they are together since troubling times.

If you ask me, it looks like a custom spell. Take a spell, like Tornado, wind dmg, modify it to do Wind + Physical dmg.
If Ygg is as customisable as we think it is, the might also be modified Tornado spells and name them yourself, that does Wind + Fire (Burning Tornado) or Wind + Lighting (Nature's Rage), etc

Shield Hero manga rips apart Overlord manga like wet toilet paper. The only merit of Overlord manga is how cutesy everything is for reaction images.
The anime for Overlord when compared to the LN is absolute garbage. Don't listen to anyone who says otherwise from an objective standpoint it retcons for no purpose and only breaks apart future storylines, as well as being nowhere near the animation level of say, OPM. All it has going for it are the excellent VA and occasional cutesy moments.
But both series skip out on tons of shit from their novel counterparts, however with Shield Hero a lot of it is in the same territory as LMS/Re:Monster/Slime Tensei/Wordmaster/etc where it's just RPG level up + new loot fluff.
With Overlord all the RPG mechanics are tied to the plot or sub plots. An easy example that literally happens in volume 1 isthe foreshadowing that Gazef has an item that lets him level up temporarily entering heroic tier. The value of this information is tied in the fact that the ring is made out of Dragon magic which is supposedly different than Yggdrasil magic (also possible it's just Super Ranked magic that's mistaken for something different) and ties into PDL.but unless you paid incredible amounts of attention to the detail it wouldn't even occur to you to be possible before hitting volume 6, and then finally confirm it in volume 7.
The only thing that goes along those lines for Shield Hero isBitch Goddess and how she's just a bratty gamer exploiting the mechanics.. Everything else is really in your face.
But ultimately what makes Overlord the most popular is because of skeletonfags and edgefags and evilfags cause let's face it, there's not a lot of options for that kinda thing. Everything else is more supplemental rather than being a core reason.
