My main issue with the show is that it feels like it's confused at times.
At one point it's making fun of a common trope with the guy catching a falling girl by grabbing her boob, only to then go full force into the irrational girl physically harming the MC for accidentally seeing her panties. Only to then have her apologize for attacking him in a later scene.
Then the whole Limbo scene was while entertaining just screamed as an excuse to do boob fan service with the bouncing tits at the end, hell all of the older girls "spell casting" involves her rubbing her boobs in one way or another.
Which would be fine if they didn't make the MC get all beta male about it everytime it happens.
I'll probably watch the next episode but it's looking like a show i'l probably drop by episode 3.

2 Mai sprints away from the monster and straight towards a clock tower that has students watching from behind it, with the monster following her. How the shot is framed and how the people behind the clock tower immediately scatter implies that the monster is close behind her.
3 Mai performs a gratuitous jump, dive, and complex pivot to come up standing right in front of the low front wall of the clock tower area. All of the cues in the shot say this, and say that she's stopped here because she can't move any further back
We don't see the monster during this bit of the clip, and there is clearly a bunch of empty space in front of Mai. What happened to it following close behind her in 2?
4 The monster charges at her. However, the shot suddenly shows a vast distance between her and the monster and it takes the monster a significant time to charge up to her. This is again inconsistent with 2's close-behind monster.
What's really happened is that the show has teleported the monster backwards so that it can do a big dramatic monster charge and have a 'Mai braces and readies herself' brief cut
5 We switch to a view behind Mai. As the monster strikes at her, the camera pulls back. Say what? In #3, right behind Mai was the retaining wall; we have nowhere to pull back to.
6 Mai jumps up and significantly back to evade the monster's strike; after a flip in midair she lands right in front of our new, pulled back camera position. Say what again?
Of course, what's really happened is that the show has teleported forward from the clock tower, because otherwise it would not be able to have the dramatic backwards jump evasion it wants.
7 Mai jumps back again from the monster's strike, jumps back a third time from another strike, and finally we pull back through the pillars of the clock tower as the monster charges into it and gets tangled.

I can't get attached to these characters if they are nothing more than perverted caricatures of actual personalities.
The problem isn't that the show advertised itself as a fanservice show from the start, it's that fanservice just interrupts or usurps what could be something meaningful or engaging in some other way that doesn't play on my baser instincts.
I'm not saying fanservice is innately wrong, im just say that I personally would like to find more meaning in the story, world, and characters, and fanservice for the sake of fanservice doesn't allow me to do that at all.
I enjoyed Seikon no Qwaser, but I could not tell you a single thing about the finer points of its characters, or even most of their names, or the systems that allow such a world to work. Out of the 3 new anime I watched, this one turned out surprisingly decent and even got more potential than the others. Sure it's fanservicey as fuck but it's KyoAni fanservice, it's like eating junk food with high quality ingredients.

I found it so difficult to watch, I watched the first episode in bursts. The MC is a boring slate, his Navi was Tirimie 2.0 albeit more obnoxious and less endearing, fanservice wasn't subtle at all (hell the OP introduced female characters with racy shots), calling out cliches doesn't make the joke less funny (the hamfisted exposition and the scene when MC channels Rito's physics). The world building doesn't really wow me either. I'll give it a few more eps but let's see if I can last through those.
