So apparently Tokyopop has 'plans to start publishing manga again in 2016', to quote:

>The company is seeking to license “hidden gems that are not yet noticed” from small or independent publishers.
>In addition, Tokyopop plans to publish art books and collectors editions, and will consider light novels.

After the shit they pulled in 2011, how does everyone feel about this? Do you think any Japanese publishers will give a shit? Oh, and according to Wikipedia, their first customer is Disney..
>>
Literally how could there be money in this market? Even the most popular shit like SnK only sells like 30000 a volume.
>>
I don't give a fuck, I'm not their target audience.
>>
>>135770670
Exactly, it sounds like Stu is running out of money and trying to stop the ship from sinking, even though there's a massive hole in the hull..
>>
>>135770670
>>135770881

Actually, the only way I could see it being profitable is if they (somehow through a miracle) managed to reclaim licenses from Kondansha and finish off series' that they halted, but even then I doubt it would be profitable.
>>
>>135770528
could they also add series like nejimaki kagyu or something?
>>
>>135772027
Jump, so no.
>>
>>135772178
fuck. there's not a lot if any jump series that have dead scanlators and is a series that's pretty popular and good. I certainly can't think of any.
>>
>>135770528
YP and the rest do it cause there is a major name behind em, so they just have to keep number even at worst.
>>
Just finish FMP and release the BLAME omnibus. That's all I want.
>>
>>135770528
their shit translations, inconsistent censorship and failure to see a series to completion means they're the lowest of the low. they're worse than funimation. the end.
>>
>>135770670
>>135770881

Buying lesser known IP's for cheap might actually be a good way to cover costs.
>>
>>135770670
ebook only releases, not that they're smart enough to do this. watch them publish crunchyroll licensed manga with no additional edits. that'll probably be what they're going to do.

Will they finish Initial D?

Nejimaki Kagyu is Young Jump not shonen jump so yeah they could

is it ok to have hope?
>>
>>135770528
I miss this company. It was so nice to go to a bookstore and see their logo when I was a teen. It felt like someone out there was making crazy anime just for me. I hope they become a success. A lot of anime has gotten worse since I was a teenager though.

fuck off
>>
>>135774097
The point was that Shueisha publishes it. It doesn't matter what magazine it's in, Viz would have to explicitly pass on the license.
>>
>>135774457
Nostalgiafag, you fuck off. I'd rather put my money on Dark Horse or Vertical. TP is shit. Their TLs are so liberal that commie actually seem conservative.

Then again, I should be glad. Because people like you are why I managed to get rid of some of my old shitty TP releases like Lupin for like 300% mark-up because MUH OUT OF PRINTS.
>>
>>135774410
>Choujin Gakuen
>goes from vol. 3 to vol. 8
who does that shit
>>
>>135774663

I'm not sure it can be called a translation in their case.

I'm praying they reprint Love Hina. I had half of the volumes before Kondansha said fuck it and didn't re-lease the license to them, then they went broke and it was impossible to get them at all.

I can dream though.
>>
>>135776110
Love Hina got reprinted in omnibuses by Kodansha.
>>
>>135770528
What happened in 2011?

If they do somehow return, I just really want them to reprint Fruits Basket. My autism won't let me have an incomplete set, even if I bought that set in middle school
>>
>>135776291
Yeah I have them, but it's sad not having all the individual TP ones.

Oh well, the Kondansha ones are way better quality anyway.
>>
>>135774072
Weren't they the ones who semi localized the names by giving everyone "nicknames"?
>>
>>135776447
Yen Press just got the license to reprint it using the new deluxe editions that just came out in Japan.
>>
NopeNopeNopeNopeNope
>>
>>135776550
A-at least the TL quality will be the same...
>>
>>135770528
Tokyopop is the worst localization company out there for manga. They do the worst translations ever.

are they still going to charge like 8 dollars a volume? how can they be competitive in a stale market?
>>
>>135770528

All I want is for Gosick to get picked back up, FUCK

Someone needs to pick up the anime too, after Bandai closed without released it.
>>
I doubt they've improved, so my opinion won't have either.
>>
>>135777658
They're pretty cheap on Amazon.

Shipping to Australia is what gets me...

Finishing and re-printing Aria would be nice.

The english language market being shit.

Wouldn't surprise me if Britain, Australia and small shits who don't get things localised into their language is what keeps the market alive.
>>
>>135770528
Tokyopoop? You mean those fuckers who kept on changing the spine designs through the run of a manga so it really triggered my autism? No thanks.

>how does everyone feel about this?
Tokyopop can go fuck themselves. With a chainsaw. Backwards, so it hurts to pull it out.

They absolutely fucked over basically every title they had the license for that I was collecting/interested in. I also sell comics and graphic novels for a living... Tokyopop leaving so many fucking things unfinished when they went under was a tremendous pain. For years we've been having to explain to annoyed customers why the next volume of the series they're collecting will never come out.

So Tokyopop should stay dead. It needs to be more dead than it currently is. It needs to have its head cut off, be stuffed with garlic, soaked in holy water and buried at a crossroads with a stake through its heart so it may never rise again. There is literally no company I dislike more than Tokyopop.
>>
>>135776447
Borders (Tokyopop's biggest customer) went bankrupt, so all of their stock went to firesale with basically nothing going back to the publishers. Instead of operate in the red for the year, Tokyopop just laid everyone off and shut down.
>>
>>135777903
Yen Press manga are already up to $13/volume, but Viz releases are $10 so that's the range they'd have to be in to survive even if they can make their name relevant again.
>>
fuck tokyopop
http://pastebin.com/5Kr65U76
>>
>>135786986
I truth, I don't think Tokyopop could have survived a year in the red... or that much further in the red than we suspect they already were. They were suffering from the effects of countless poor decisions and shoddy work already when the Borders thing happened. Had the Borders thing not happened, I think Tokyopop only had a couple of years left in them anyway.

Maybe they will become just like the german Tokyopop and 90% of their releases are going to be boys love or shoujo.
Though the german Tokyopop also released good night punpun.
>>
>>135776515
Yeah, that was cancer but at least they were putting the manga out. The existing scanlations are beyond terrible, and most of it are just tokyopop scans anyway.
