i've been using it for 1.5 years now. i'm on level 29 of 60 (~800 kanji and 2000+ vocab?). i did not do anything else to study Japanese during that time and have recently started studying grammar (a dictionary of basic japanese grammar, genki and tae kim's guide). being able to read the kanji makes unfamiliar text muc hless intimdating.
i recently started using lang-8 and found thtat i can have basic conversations with non-native speakers.
i like wanikani becaause i'm not very disciplined. if i had to learn the vocab or kanji on my own via something like rtk, i would get tired one day or tell myself that i really did understand the kanji i was learning and move on.
with wanikani, i don't have to think about learning and the system punishes you for not logging in daily( not a problem on lower levels but a serious problem on higher levels). reviews accumulate even if you don't log in. if you go waway for a week, you'll come back with 500 or 1000 reviews-- then there goes your whole saturday or even weekend.
i mentioned that i've been on wanikani for for 1.5 years but am less than half way through the material. i've got a full time job and am also learning french at the moment for work. if you are a university student taking japanese, have lots of freetime, or are livign in japan , you will likely find that it is much faster to move through the revies.
i paid full price for lifetime which is expensive ($250?) but worth it for my purposes. if you can a discount, it is an even better value but why not try the first few levels and see if it is for you.
keep in mind, it starts off slow and requires you to start from nothing. you can't jump to level 5 if you already know the most frequent 100 kanji.
