Watching the movie around that point, you really get the feeling that Naruto is overworking himself out the ass to the point that he hasn't slept in days because he keeps overworking. He didn't even remember Himawari was having a birthday until Boruto reminded him earlier that day.
He's sending shadow clones out here and there all day, doing paper work without end, getting ready for the Chuunin exams, it was too damn much and he finally fucked up at the worst time. Boruto said he wouldn't forgive the old man if he messed up Hima's party, Naruto thinks he can handle sending out one more clone, but then he passes out later that night before the party was over and the clone poofs away.
Shikamaru finds him where he passed out in his office on the floor later that night, and says he can just take the rest of the night off and go home already.
For obvious reasons Naruto doesn't feel like going home that night though.
Instead he just spends the rest of the night doing paper work until Sasuke shows up to talk about some ninja shit.
Hinata tries to talk Boruto down into realizing that his father means well, he's just having a stressful time recently. Boruto though quickly forgets about it when he meets Sasuke, and develops his first homo-crush.
