I really hated the Hideaki Anno circlejerk they did in the show. The hack has made ONE relatively good anime that was a big cultural hit and everyone in the industry seems to put him on a pedestal because of it. Finally got around to watching the 3rd Aerial squad OVA the other day.
It was actually a really fun setup. I would've loved to read it in manga form. For all the 20 minutes there were, the characters were really endearing. The whole thing reminded me of the sort of style of apocalyptic sci-fi manga that were all the rage in the late 80's and 90's.
The CGI was absolutely fucking atrocious, though. Holy shit that garbage ruined literally every action sequence. Musani can't do CG for shit

I've seen decent cgi done for simple machines like that before and it looks alright (eg. GuP's tanks). The fact that it doesn't really gel with the artstyle can be forgiven if the actual motion is solid and, in theory, there's nothing easier to animate with CGI than an aircraft since it's literally just transformations and perspective changes with no actual model animation. But, despite all that, they still managed to make it look awful and stiff.

That did have the benefit of the fact that the 3d scenes were entirely 3d. Blending small 3d props into a 2d environment and with 2d characters is part of what tends to make it look so glaringly awful. There's nothing inherently wrong with cartoony 3d animation on its own aside from the fact that it just doesn't look as good or dynamic in motion as hand drawn animation. That shortcoming just becomes glaringly obvious when the 3d is alongside moving 2d, and when it's a half-assed cost cutting measure with no real effort or passion put into it.

Hey, George Lucas had Star Wars AND Indiana Jones (came up with the idea for and co-wrote Raiders). And American Graffiti wasn't terrible. He's not nearly the accidental one-hit-wonder Anno is.
That said, I'd argue Lucas got more lucky, Lucas' franchises are way better (probably because he had less direct control over them in the beginning), but Anno is more talented as a director, and probably in general what with all the animation. They're both shit writers.

I saw it a couple days ago too. The whole episode looked cheap as dirt. It gave some good insight into exactly what they were producing though. PA Works themselves have one of the better in-house CGI departments, not that that's saying much when we're talking about anime.
