I don't dislike season 3, I thought it was pretty good. But I just have a slight preference to Doga's take on the series. Seasons 1 and 2 were very close, for me, but I'll give the nod to S2 because of the EP11: "The Akari Who Leapt Through Time".

3 was great, they solved the repetitive joke problem and several annoying characters were made likeable.
2 was the the best by far. Season 1 I hated Kyouko but in season 2 Kyouko became my favorite character.

Don't really remember anymore, except that I never liked Dogakobo's seasons much to begin with. They were a bit too hyper and cruel to my liking, and while the animation quality was great, the character designs were unimpressive compared to Namori's art.
Never finished season 3. While I preferred the character designs, it just felt stale and uninteresting.
All in all I guess I'd pick season 1 because it was new to me, and introduced me to the manga, which I love and consider vastly superior to any of the animated material (the Nachuyachumi OVA was damn good, though).

There were a few moments I loved, like Animal Crossing in N+ and Sakurakochanman, though it was cut short. I just can't believe how lifeless everything else was. There was one time S3 made me laugh and that was Akari trying to fix her painting in art class.
1 and 2 were so good that I argued THEN that Yuru Yuri's production was way more than it deserved. The manga material is so pleasantly vanilla and the series is like there's one scoop of the vanilla and the rest is a banana split.
TYO gave me about the vanilla I expected but the mostly static art and dulled color sometimes gave me the impression that the ice cream was dripping off the sides.
1 is better than 2 on average. 2 had 2-11, but it also had very meh episodes like 2-2 and 2-4.
Of course, this is partially because they could choose to skip boring chapters when doing S1, but had to animate them for S2. 2-2 is literally a containment episode for a large portion of the skipped chapters.

Now, I enjoyed all those, but I love all the chapters of Yuru Yuri, even the boring ones, because to me they do comfy right. The first seasons did those moments justice as well. There are times when I got a bit annoyed with those anime, Sabagebu especially. Sometimes it took too long to get a joke across.

I disagree about S3. The more animated moments consisted of just sped up animations. Really killed the mood.
The OVA pulled it off a lot better with the change in location, so scenes taking place one after another actually makes sense, but with the same complaint about sped up animations.

In the manga it appeared exactly once and was just Akari being plain, childish and cute.
It was used for a second time in S2E11 to create a scene where Akari is happy during distress.
Why it was used in S3E12, I have no idea.

S3 covers a lot of the material where the characters start to mature over the course of the manga and become more than just flimsy "haha anime nosebleed!!" "I'm blushing and stuttering because I'm a tsundere" archetypes. Meanwhile the new studio plays with super comfy backgrounds and ambiance.
Don't get me wrong, doga kobo is a god tier studio. and I think this season couldn't have been any of the others. It can't just rehash the same jokes and opening sequence endlessly, but also, it couldn't have been the first or second season because we weren't ready for comfy, human yuru yuris.
Far out, Chinatsu would feel right at home over in the Miiverse.

I have some respect for the director of this season successfully creating the illusion that the characters developed over the continuity of the episodes. But it used the manga for all its material in which the characters are still flimsy anime nosebleed gag humans each allocated 1 joke. S2 barely beats out S1 which are much better than S3.
Other than the Rize ep, some Ayano/Kyouko moments, and pic related, nothing managed to sooth my cold heart like 1 and 2 did so fantastically.
Which season had this episode? That's the best one.
I marathoned S1/S2 so I'm can't even remember.

You can't be serious. The characters don't mature, the most that carries over is usually characters meeting. They don't just repeat the same jokes either because it's not entertaining. That's not what a running gag is. Repetition is used, but appropriately and in moderation. Go back and tell me exactly when the old studio just used the same joke endlessly in the same situation. Chances are it was either in the manga, or in an original scenario. You're the type of person that says the Akari intros were getting old. So what were the cross reviews?

It's just padding, and there was lots of it. Other anime do it better. If you want comfy, human yurus, read the manga or rewatch the old seasons, because you've obviously forgotten everything about both.

Although they did choose which chapters to do it still mostly came from the manga. That makes it not their fault, just going in a different order. It's also not the same joke endlessly, or even the same situations. FYI some people did really like them, see thread.
For that reason some people prefer S2 over 1. I like 2 better because Sakurako and Himawari. The upside of Ayano and Chitose being used so much over them in S1 was more Ayano.
