He's not a minority. A lot of people really loved the 80's style of animation. Mostly because of the shading. It made anime look "realistic" in terms of lighting and depth.
Artwise the best show I've seen in the past year is probably Hibike, and even then the best shots really pale in comparison to stuff like Bubblegum Crisis. KyoAni does shading basically anywhere except the face though, and it still looks like modern anime. Nothing like what the 80's and early 90's had.

I really haven't watched much 80s anime. I actually don't think I've watched a single TV anime, only a few OVAs and movies, but not much of that either. Though, to be fair, most 80s anime with a cultural continuity up to modern anime culture is OVAs.
It's not like I'm opposed to 80s stuff, it's just that I don't watch a lot of old stuff, and the 80s seems to be a dead period compared to the 70s and the 90s when it comes to older anime.
