Most characters are pretty bland and forgettable. The show also forgets it's a visual medium and throws out exposition without any interesting or good imagery. The direction might even be lower than average.

It's good if it's one of the first anime's you watch.
It has a good story, fairly good animation, sound and art. It also has a good concept and setting.
It's story is solid, There aren't many plotholes as much as there are things to nitpick, or some small unnecessary plot elements here and there.
Main thing is as one anon put it, the characters are setpieces for the most part, there just to move the concept or the message the writer wanted to get across. It's harmless on it's own and not a bad place to start, but you'll definitely find better series.

Squealer managed to do some things undetected, but the series never really told us how far he could've gone with it, since such a scenario never happens due to Saki and Satoru eventually finding out by accident. Though I do think it has been somewhat established that they cannot simply 'flee'.
Also wasn't the world more fucked up the further you went, due to subconscious cantus leakage, meaning even if they could flee, they'd end up in some horrible place where they'd probably all die?
All in all, even if they didn't spell it out, I always thought the only options queerats had were slavery or rebellion (in hope of future freedom). The point was that given their circumstances (which have been created by humans), there was no way for them to peacefully coexist alongside humans on an equal basis.
In contrast to that, humans didnt need to enslave the queerats, but they still did it. Humans always had the option of just letting the queerats fuck off, but they chose to enslave them to ensure their own comfort instead. If humans had granted queerats freedom and queerats became hostile out of their own volition, you could just punish/exterminate them, but to our knowledge such a thing never happened.
In general I'd say that the queerats had it worse, meaning their behavior was more justified than the humans'.
Of course this doesn't mean I'm gonna spout that 'Squealer did nothing wrong' nonsense, but he did what he had to in order to pursue his goal, given the few options he had. There are always better ways, but he tried to minimize risks and increase chance of success, which is why he went to such extremes.
In the end he failed and it wasn't due to him being right or wrong, but rather a question of power. We're spectators, so we can try to judge things without being involved. But its characters aren't. If you're human, you want humans to win, if you're a queerat within Squealer's colony, you want Squealer to win.

1. Frustrated because they feel it deserves better

I liked it a lot, but this is, like you said, mostly because of its atmosphere and setting. I thought it created a cool universe, though it handled the presentation terribly with an abundance of boring exposition.
