Still getting a second season. Pretty much all original anime without a big otaku/fujo bait name attached to them bombed this year and nothing reached the 10K mark or even came close really so it doesn't mean much. I mean fuck your best selling original anime's this year were the absolute clusterfuck Charlotte on KEY branding alone and gay Earth Defense Fujoshi Idols that nobody watched and sold based on Mamoru Miyano and Hiroshi Kamiya baiting. Both are looking to finish at about a meager 5-7K average and that's the absolute best result for originals with pretty much everything else in the 1-3K range.

Who the fuck knows what's going on with Sunrise these days. They occasionally break the veil of absolute silence to announce a Gundam series or some news about one of their OVA or Movie projects but for having 12 divisions and pretty much being the second biggest and oldest studio after Toei they've done remarkably few TV shows in the last couple years. I'm wondering if they're having a hard time finding TV slots now or something. Maybe they're still coasting on Love Live and Gundam money who knows.
My biggest fear as a fan of the studio is they might not have to do anything at the moment other than sit idle and watch the revenue from the Love Live and Gundam merchandise roll in while being sure to pump out a new Gundam series every year or two to make sure the turn over in model kits is satisfied.

Yeah well when you literally own two of the biggest franchises in all of anime that cover a broad spectrum of viewer types the royalties alone from merchandising and licensing must be absolutely insane and the options on what to do next nearly limitless. They've just kind of had hit after hit after hit this decade between Akito, Yamato, Love Live, Gundam stuff, Tiger and Bunny, Short Peace and Miss Hokusai (at least critically) and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting so it's definitely not a financial situation keeping them from putting out more stuff.
No idea why A-1 their spinoff who has Sony as an overhead for financial security now needs to dish out like 5+ series every single season though. Maybe it's that they don't actually own a lot of the things they make and don't get to keep a lot of the profits nor get royalties or anything like that. I mean when you think about they have like what...Anohana? Aldnoah was supposed to be their Gundam but that obviously didn't work out at all. Their biggest hits like Uta no Prince, SAO and iDOLM@STER they don't own and instead it looks like Bandai is finding a way to bogart most of the profits from the latter two anyway, the last of which they do own and managed to steal the lion share of the disc sales from Aniplex on via their G4U scheme. It's weird like it seems like they for whatever reason have to just keep pumping shit out on contract work to stay afloat since I heard their financial situation isn't as great as you might think.
Bones and Deen their other spinoffs are pretty active lately too but again same situation, just a dearth of original hits which was precisely what did their last now defunct spinoff Manglobe in in 2015.

Yeah I don't know I think the industry needs to look at what Sunrise and P.A Works are doing and maybe try to emulate that model more. Like if you can score some big original hits you probably won't have to work your staff to death and can even work your way into stuff like producing and taking your time with stuff like OVAs and Movies.
I think we're going to start seeing this from P.A Works a little more as well soon enough. They've done a lot of things right in focusing on building originals, a steady brand identity and especially with delivering Shirobako recently and finally seemed poised to reap the rewards of it. If there's one area they could still stand to improve on it's variety since far too many titles follow the whole teen coming of age story in a seaside town formula usually featuring some sort of music. Like Kyoani they also seem to lead heavily on Lantis which really is just feeding even more money back into Banrise at the end of the day. Still though definitely a rare recent success story in the industry that it can be kind of proud of, Charlotte and Glasslip aside and all.

Don't see how there's bashing there, it just seems like they are stuck in this cycle now where they have to take on constant work in order to keep things operating at the level they are at. Like I kind of imagine A-1 as this big factory assembly line enterprise that relies on production just never stopping for a second for if it were the whole apparatus would just come crashing down and take fair more time than it's worth to get going again. Around Summer 2014 they just upped production like 300% and haven't let up at all since until the season that just finished which was by far their lightest in about a 6 seasons and it looks like that's mainly just a result of the wheels kind of falling off the wagon in Spring where they tried to do like 8 projects at the same time and the result was the QUALITY of Gunslinger Stratos, Ultimate Otaku Teacher and a season of Nanoha that somehow managed to look even worse than StrikerS which I didn't think was possible. They also had to completely postpone continuing Cinderella Girls which was supposed to be a continuous run since it became literally impossible to fit it into the schedule anymore and instead finish it in the Fall and still need to take out several special episodes in order to catch back up.
Despite all this it looks like they're launching right back in to constant 5+ series a season at least for winter 2016 so all I can say is lets see how that works out.
