Nice job you got a reply I hope you're real proud of your shitpost.

Anything that rescans the original film and doesn't slap a million and one terrible filters over it to try to make it look like horrible digital coloring.
Oh, and doesn't make the disgusting choice to crop the 4:3 to 16:9.
>>

The Levels would have been the best anime restoration ever if it was finished.

Why did they stop the level sets? They were literally perfect. The new ones seem like the orange bricks.

>>135637728
No one bought them in the us because "muh 16:9" and grain probably.
Later funimation did a quiz to find out what people wanted and thats what we got

Escaflowne for Example

Read the ANN forum comments for any series.
Those are the kind of people who vote in anime polls.
>>
On the grain subject, why do sub groups think its nice to use a ton of noise reduction in grained anime?
There are people praising the release which looks 2 times worse than it does on raw since most of the detail was killed along with the grain. Why is this allowed?

Toei was in the studio looking over their shoulder the whole process. Expect them to be released in japan soon. They will eat that shit up over there.

What? That the BD looks lighter?
That BD is obviously a proper remaster, so that's closer to how it was intended to look than the DVD, which would likely have been transferred from a Nth generation Digibeta tape that had degraded over the years.
>>
>>135639976
>>
>>135639625
First, you suggested that Toei was interested in the Levels for themselves, which there's no proof of whatsoever, then went on to say that they would be interested in a cropped version of one of their flagship titles. Kai is one thing, but give me a break.

I'll give you this, FUNimation helping the original studios with their own properties isn't unheard of. I believe their upscale of Samurai Champloo ended up being released in Japan later? Their dub of Baccano also made it onto Japanese releases.

But Toei is not so receptive. We're talking about the same company that gave Viz the shittiest masters possible of Sailor Moon after years of licensors fighting over the North American rights. If anything, I'm more inclined to think Toei canned the Levels because they didn't like the idea of a foreign licensor making a better product than they could.
>>
>>135639976
Its not a bluray... Its a frame snap...1999 hxh exists only in that horrible dvd form which like you said is from tapes...
And most likely the broadcast telecine since there are huge inconsistencies in colors and lighting between episodes. The film cuts and joints are present as well
>>

>>135640211
Glad I didn't wait for the BDs and bought the DVDs instead. Who am I kidding, I wanted them to be good.
>>
>>135640155
Not him but it think funi used shitty generation reels for the levels, since they had big contrast issues
>>
>>135641175
That's true, poor contrast and crushed blacks, but the grain, sharpness, and dirt removal make up for it in spades. Issues like that lessen with each episode too. As an example, FUNimation's master of the first episode looks really terrible for whatever reason, no matter what release it is.

If Toei allowed FUNimation to use the same process as the Levels on their original masters, that would be the best version by far. Sadly, I just don't see it happening.
>>
>>135641684
If i had to take a guess its because then levels would look better that the dragonboxes and those are the ones toei hails as the best release possible and tries to milk them.

Yes she's a cunt, the only bad thing about the show is that it was rushed and we didn't get enough fights (that was the real appeal for me) instead they gave us that shitty love triangle that lasted so many episodes...
>>
>>135644356
>that shitty love triangle that lasted so many episodes..
That's what ruined everything. It ground the story to a halt so it could have its shoujo garbage and try to with the "Hitomi might get with Alan!" bullshit even though it's not remotely possible within the show, nor is it going to work from viewing the show in a meta perspective. It's just tedium to watch it treat the audience like we're retarded and think that any of the shoujo bullshit actually matters.

Trying to scrub the image clean and pretend the original work was never shot on film is a shitty practice in animation and in live action.

>>
>>135646186
Many first-run DVDs in the early 2000s, and not just anime, were scanned from old Betamax or DigiBeta tapes that had been made for broadcast. But those are rarely stored right and over the years degrade like crazy.
As TVs got better, people started to demand better picture and that's why "remastering" became a thing. That is, going back to the original film reels and rescanning those for better, non-degraded images. Remastering has taken on a whole new ring with higher resolutions found in Blu-Rays and it's becoming more and more worth the money for companies to dig up old film reels to rescan because it's like owning a whole new product sometimes with how much the picture improves.

Then release them in 480p. TVs have scalers for a reason, so most of that shit looks pretty good. Applying filters just murders the film. This is artistic crime.

>>
>>135646848
It's a shame because shows during that period started to substantially improve animation quality after they stopped needing to be painted onto cels. The artistic skill deserves higher resolution.

That excuse for sub-1080p mastering I sometimes hear—that they don't need to make the drawings as detailed because it's harder to see—is bullshit. Stuff now is mastered at 720p for file size management purposes and elevens having low standards. The drawing quality itself is worthy of 1080p usually.

If the genga pages still exist in storage somewhere they could be rescanned, but then they'd have to be recolored and everything else. That will never happen.

All the Patlabor BD releases are pretty fucking spectacular. Extremely high quality rescans of the original film for the movies, OVA1 and the relatively low budget TV series. Stunningly, not only did a company pick up Patlabor for international distribution after CPM folded but they bothered making sure they did a really nice release of the same BD Japan got.

You know, there is an argument to be made that we are no longer watching these things as the creators intended. Most older shows were made with the limitations of a half decent CRT from the mid 80's and the medium it was going to be transferred on (betamax in-station and probably VHS or LD if you were rolling in it for a home release) in mind. We weren't meant to see the little animation imperfections, the corners cut or even the grain. Not saying I believe it, but there's an argument to be made.
>>
>>135647271
But the studios sell off stacks of original line art all the time to make a quick buck.
>>
>>135647092
IIRC a lot of Disney's old guard animators were painfully old when VHS first came out. On the other hand, Hayao Miyazaki is still alive and kicking. Dead animators can't tell stupid interns not to butcher their work with filters.

Not to my knowledge. All the movies and OVAs got a huge BD box release sometime last year, the raws have been on Nyaa since November and only now am I seeing groups decide to slap the subs on them.
Either that or they've been uploading to other sites in which case ignore me, I'm a huge faggot who doesn't use private trackers.

It's more like we're getting to do that for the first time, considering that these new HD releases are picking up more detail than ever; production houses usually screen right from the masters using extremely expensive equipment and as such what they saw looked much better than what everyone else got.

I have yet to see a BD as peerless as Spirited Away. It's probably the most technically impressive film I've ever seen and I'm glad that it didn't get fucked up. Tenshi no Tamago has a pretty great release, as does GiTS, but not as clean and precise as Spirited Away.

How does Mononoke fair in it's BD transition? IIRC it was the last film to be entirely hand drawn by Ghibli I think?

You know, I really hate mobilefags, and every fucking time I'm about to have a change of heart a faggot like you comes along to renact this very same shitposting because of your fucking inferior fucking piece of shit technology. And the worst part is that you fuckers already have workarounds these very situations, for example you could just have fucking saved the picture and searched it afterwards. So I can never tell if you're genuinely hopeless or if you're just a pathetic faggot that can't into simple technology to the point where you disregard the whole fucking thread so that anons cater to your needs (like they should, right?).

No matter how many times I try to convince myself that "it's just a tiny computer" or "sure, people might actually have legitimate reasons to be posting from a fucking phone", I'm invariably met with a faggot like you.

Thank you for reminding me that phonefags are some of the worst and most cancerous fucks out there and that the only reason why An Hiro doesn't ban you all is that you're an increasingly more relevant demography.

This is just going to get worse, isn't it?

Watched the Walt Disney documentary yesterday. Very interesting stuff. Really makes you wonder what would have happened if he hadn't died so suddenly.

But then, he was an eccentric and didn't even care about his animated features after a while. He developed a train obsession during the making of Cinderella and the movie obviously suffered from his lack of input. But even before that, he'd already let the studio become sterile and run like a factory. After a while he didn't really care about investing in new talent and just let the core group he had (well, those he hadn't fired out of suspicions they were communists) run things even though they were suffering creatively in their roles.

So people actually wanted 4:3 but Funimation cropped it anyway and lied about the poll results.

It's called Digital Noise Reduction (DNR).

It can range from slightly noticeable to "the ink is running because we left the cells in the rain overnight." Either way, it's bad because it removes detail. Some companies go even further beyond and CROP the frame so that it'll be 16:9.
