Damn, it's been quite a while, but I don't remember R being bad. The J to X just rubbed me the wrong way. It was amusing that Hanagata could be seen as winning at the end, though.
Since they blew up the robots, I sort of wonder if they would just do more sidestories of the time before then for the OVA.

The first season is pretty good. It's kind of has a "can robots be considered people" premise.

I don't see this working well to be honest.
SMJ was a 90s series through and through.
It had a long build-up, thus why it was a long series.
The character designs are 90s-ish - as much as Cyber Team.. Even SJ2X - which was more "modern" in terms of designs was based off 90ish designs.
That being said, I can see the designs being easily bypassed, but not the series length. I cannot see SMJ shorted to 25 (or even worse 12) episodes, considering pacing is a lot faster these days.
This new OAV is both the one show I am most looking forward to this year and also the one I am dreading the most. Please don't be another Sailormoon Crystal or Slayers Revolution.

You might get a bit of a hint from the press release AIC put out in July, which had pic related attached.
Gut feeling is that they're going for a more extreme design reminiscent of the 90s, but much more kiddish.
Look at that bolt sticking all the way through Lime's head in place of her signature red-ball-thing. Also, look at Bloodberry's height and proportions. It's possible they could be going forthem as young teenagers after the end of J->X
This will probably not turn out well, which is an absolute fucking shame.
