This movie is terrible, and Shinkai is the kind of hack Miyazaki has talked about in the industry. He wallows in sentimentality but he shows no understanding of human behavior, and is possibly stuck on long lost "love" in his own life that has stunted his development. The one time he deviated from his one trick, what did he do? He aped Ghibli. The biggest hack working today.

She and Her Cat was the best thing he ever did. The longer the format, the worse it is when he's in charge. Except for Voices, that was a straight-up Ghibli pastiche and not too shabby for that.

It starts out as being the distance that keeps them seperate, but after that, the distance becomes a metaphor for their increasing distance in perception of each other.
The whole middle section was about how he would always glance out over the horizon towards an unreachable goal. And the space launch symbolized his journey towards nothing. Heck he even had the voiceover where he imagined himself on that journey, going through the void with no goal. That's his situation. The idealized version of Akari had become unreachable. He was writing his dreams and random messages to her, but just sent them to himself. If there is a more literal image of "she's only inside him and his memories now", I don't know where to find it.
