I love a lot of older mecha anime but at this point I kind of don't know why they keep doing them because outside of the odd OVA or Movie like Gundam Unicorn or Origin they do not sell at all anymore really and a lot of the worst shows coming out lately are mecha anime. Maybe with a very heavy idol/music theme Delta can be the first one to sell over the 10K mark this decade but it'll need some clever packaging to do so.

I think it's significantly harder to see their changes. When it comes to Gundam, each one has like a different face or at least have a unique function that helps make it easy to tell them apart. But when it comes to Macross, they all do the same general 3-step transformation and all go pew-pew-pew. Only the ace customs look really different and even then the biggest change is that they each shoot more lasers or carry more missiles (or in Basara's case have a face, now that's the kind of difference I'm talking about)
I'm saying this because I'm seeing people talk about them in this series as some sort of downgrade as like they all don't do the same thing anyway

When the first Macross came out there weren't a whole lot of real robot shows. Heck Macross INSPIRED shit like Mech Warrior in the West, it's one of the fathers of the fucking genre if anything.
Sure later it degenerated into 90s stupidity just like Gundam but that wasn't the plan.
And the difference is unlike Gundam it can't write off the stupidity as easily so now they have to incorporate it into the canon.
I can see how Macross being a parody sounds logical to a F generation shitter though.
But just looking through a single of the original design files can show you how Macross is anything BUT a joke to the people that were making it. If anything there's more engineering that went into the designs for the original Macross than all of the other popular mecha anime at the time combined.
