Is there any way to stop Japan from trying to go full 3D with anime or is the world just fucked on this issue?

Still looks like DVD extra or a video game.

Sure, it's its own thing, but it looks pretty good and would be hard to do with regular/traditional animation.

Studio Shirogumi is a well-respected CGI-studio that does commercials, movies, and game CGs.

Another good CGI-studio is Studio Gooneys.

The problem with nip CGI is that 90% of the time they use it as a way to cut costs.
They still treat 3D as if it has the properties of 2D. They give their models flat shading, no textures, and animate them like theyre a puppet with a stick up their asses.
Nip CGI is stiff and devoid of life, and when they learn to animate 3D with the same vibrance as the west manages, then it will be acceptable.

Or they can just never touch actual 3D and stick to fucking Live2D. Thatd be good too.

Real 3D (i.e. American style 3d) is too expensive so that will never happen. Eventually they will develop a 3D style that actually works and then it will be all over.

Remnder that next season will at least two fully CGI anime

Reminder that this trend will not stop until all non-CGI anime are erased by 2020

To be fair, CG nowadays looks a LOT better than CG 10 years ago.
In another 10 years, who knows what it will look like. They might even be able to mimic the standard 2D you see today.

It isn't that they treat 3D as if it has the properties of 2D it is that they are actively trying to make 3D feel more like 2D. It isn't an error or lack of ability but a concious attempt to achieve the same feeling as 2D Japanese animation. They want to retain the distinct flavour Japanese animation has compared to Western animation that comes from limited animation and variable frame rates. Thus they purposefully reduce the number of frames in their 3D animation after rendering in full animation for example and do things like intentionally fuck up the clean lines their rendering puts out to make it look more hand drawn rather than clean and 3D. The degree of success they achieve with that is arguable but they actually put more time and effort into trying to achieve that then they have to if they just went for normal 3D.

3D is a lot different to 2D and just trying to adapt typical 2D stylistic techniques is not going to work. They'd make a decision and stop trying to immitate it and I don't think otaku are going to accept a change like that anytime soon.

Neither do the 3D studios hence the attempts at imitation.

One of the main problems I think arises when they also try to mesh 3D and 2D elements together. When it is done badly you can see that the 3D elements and 2D elements are running at completely different frame rates, the lighting is different, the colouring is different, the textures feel completely different. Which just makes it stick out like a sore thumb and leaves you just spotting the difference all the time distracting you from the show as you realise how shitty it looks. The anime that do better with 3D tend to be ones that use them for completely separate "worlds" to the 2D one where the characters for example transform and the setting looks entirely different so there isn't a jarring difference to notice between the two.

Shirobako episode 10. It is apparently a masterpiece that has inspired countless people to become 3D animators.

Harlock movie looked pretty nice for full CGI.

Same for Gundam IGLOO.
