According to Kaneko's tweets, the first draft was close to what we got but Mamori was more dominant. He didn't like it because Mamori/Mirei were too out of character so he rejected the script. Then a second script was done that was just Mirei and Mamori being loveydovey with each other, which he approved. But for some reason when the storyboards and shit came back it was based on the first script and not the second script.
They didn't have time to start from scratch again so they had to go with it, with Kaneko adjusting the dialog somewhat to try and make it a bit less out of character.

That artist has basically drawn J the exact opposite of what she actually is.
