Lain is great conceptually, but I never really liked or enjoyed any of the characters.
Haibane Renmei has great characters and an alright concept.
Texh has a distinctive depressive atmosphere with alright characters. Kind of a mediator.

We are upon agreement and disagreement. I can't understand anyone liking Inherent Vice. I haven't seen all his films though. Maybe after my Manga reading I'll do the rest of my film marathons. I haven't seen all of PTA and I liked the acting, concept and ideas it brought forward. The direction was standard fare for PTA though. Isn't as good as There Will Be Blood, but I generally enjoyed the characters more in Magnolia. Sure the main character of TWBB was pretty well fleshed out and Paul Dano did a great job as the Priest, but I didn't like how he handled the son character and I kinda disliked the last time skip as well.
