Kekkai Sensen is a good concept on paper but it was terrible executed. I enjoyed the soundtrack, the visuals but the characters are paper thin and the plot was all over the place.
It doesn't help they delayed the last episode by several months and it made things even more confusing. Disappointing to say the least and I just wish it was an episodic anime of randomness of Jerusalem Lot. I really enjoyed KS when it was first airing but I think it was around episode 9 that the show just completely lost me. I tried picking it back up a month or so ago from the start but ended up dropping it for a second time. I think its premise, setting and characters are a combination of unique and interesting, but it had a difficult time at both being engaging and making the viewer care about what was going on. I have a few volumes of the manga that I haven't gotten around to so I'll see if those are any better.

True enough. Well, and sorry for not being precise (my memory is fairly shit), I mostly liked it for the characters and direction. While some of it didn't work (like the relation between Arima and his mother which isn't properly developped iirc, and some annoying minor characters), and while Kaori's motivations could be seen as really shonenish in how exaggerated it was, I loved most of the cast. As for the direction, I'm no music expert but I found the concert beautiful and the way the drama was handled sent me on the good ol' rollercoaster. I also really liked the artstyle and choice of colors.
The only real gripe I have about it is the whole part with that one dude's sister and how Arima becomes his tutor. Nobody cares and they just take way too much time with that.

I thought the loli and her brother and the other rival were the best characters. Arima's mother thing was bad, like you said,, and Kaori was basically a plot device and whose reactions/thoughts about her own fatal disease took a back seat to Arima's reactions to it. The two friends were irrelevant except for one scene every few episodes where we were supposed to pretend to care about the childhood friend's senpai troubles.
I'm not a music expert, either, so I'm not saying they needed to pick some obscure patrician stuff, but they'd just start playing and then talk over it and do some sweeping shots, it didn't usually feel like it was contributing to anything. Kekkai Sensen is a perfect example of all style and no substance. The characters are all colorful and unique in their design and mannerisms, but none of them are explored in any degree of depth, with the worst characters in the show being essentially nothing and the best still being pretty cliche. The world is the exact same way. Although there's the suggestion that this is a deeply interesting and unique place to live, only on one do we actually explore the city in any detail and tackle any problems that might be faced past "there's something vaguely dangerous that needs to be dealt with."
It also a fucking horribly opening episode. I would have dropped it right there if fans of the show hadn't kept saying to pick it back up. Admittedly, it got better, but not better enough to warrant a watch in my opinion.

The show falls flat on its face with the vampire plot at episode 9+. The sense of mystery they gave when they're first introduced in the episode with Abrahms definitely kept me interested. Having the anime original stuff tie the episodes together worked well until Bones had to attempt to make an ending.
