You know, I do think the girls in Asterisk were cuter than the girls in Rakudai.
But man, I hate them so much. What really pissed me off about them is that even for a light novel adaptation, their relationships with the protagonist was fucking stupid.
Don't get me wrong, Stella jumps the cock faster than I'm comfortable with and I never liked little sister characters, but I can kind of get the excuse they've got going for why they like the dude. But man, Asterisk didn't even try. They don't like the protagonist because he's nice, or because he's cool, or because he's got a huge fucking dick or some shit. All of them except Julis are just kind of introduced wanting to bang him before we even know who the fuck they are, and then Julis decides she wants to bang him when she has reason to not want to bang him at all.

For me, it's more of a balance between the plot of the story and the harem elements. I enjoyed Shana/Index/Zero because they weren't shoving the harem elements down my throat as hard as the stuff you read today. Not to mention, the characters in those older novels had a nostalgic flair that made them distinct unlike the ones you read in current novels.

I hated both shows but powered on through finishing them both. If I had to be honest Rakudai was much more better as a collective and had better developed characters. Whereas Asterisk just had me rolling my eyes constantly much more than Rakudai.
The first episode of Asterisk is like the studio dumping every anime cliche in existence into one episode. Horrendous.

Out of curiosity I compared the Volume 5 covers for all three LNs.
I find it kinda interesting how for Asterisk, Ayato isn't even on the cover. For Rakudai, Ikki is there but has his back turned. But for AntiMagic, Takeru is right there, glaring at you and grabbing the attention of the reader.

The first four volumes didn't really convince me the first time I saw them. Glad they changed it up real nice to reflect actual plot taking place.
Right had too many generic female characters and a very herbivore protagonist with a setting that has been seen a million times and is a shitty IS clone. Left was strangely better even though it does not have efficient world building or setting like Asterisk does.
