Guys, I fell for it. I fell for the god damn jouyou troll. I've learned all jouyou and jinmeiyou kanji and just as I thought I was gonna be finished with kanji, my teacher dropped the bomb: The average japanese person can read 20 000 kanji. TWENTY THOUSAND FUCKING KANJI. I'M NOT EVEN AT 3000.

Studying Japanese was a mistake.

There's nothing funny about this. I was an NYR last year, if I'd known the amount of kanji was this insurmountable I never would've started, but I was never told of the 20 000 kanji. The worst part is that another generation is gonna be tricked by the jouyou posters in the following weeks, I weep for thee.
>>
So how do you learn a word in anki?
>>
>>135547583
I think the best resolutions are those you can think of and work on. For instance, if you say "I want to get healthy", you'll soon forget the NYR and not really do anything about it. But if you say, "I want to maintain a schedule of x reps of y exercise a day" then it's something you can focus on and actually work on.

Therefore, for Japanese, a good NYR would be something like "finish a full length VN / LN / novel every month", or "hit x,000 new words added in anki". If it sounds like that's just work, well yeah, that's what it is. I think a lot of people approach NYRs as "wishes" - I wish to be good at Japanese, so my NYR is "i want to be good at Japanese". That's why people fail, because they're wishing not working.

My NYR is to finish Legend of Galactic Heroes.
>>
>>135547583
Finish some anki deck.
Read x books a month/year
Read an online newspaper every day.

That is not true. A few simple ideas:

Certain genre of manga (im looking at you sol manga) do not use certain words or grammar structures, or not frequently enough (i challange you to find jplt lvl 1 and 2 grammar in certain manga)

The writing style in a manga is more often than not conversational. It does not give adequate exposure to other writing styles, which again use different structures.

Hello all,

When applying the discount code "wanikani heart textfugu" on a year subscription on Wanikani, it brings the total down to $50 for a year. However, it also has a category labeled "Good for" with "forever" being the value. What exactly does this indicate? Does it mean that in 1 year, should I decide to renew, that it will again be priced at $50 for a year?

Thanks!
>>
>>135552925
Yes. Even if you stop your sub, it will be $50/yr afterwards.

Is it really possible to learn Japanese by yourself? I'm having a hard time believing you can get to a decent level without being tutored.
>>
>>135553083
I went from 0 to reading visual novels and manga without much issue, all by myself, no tutors.

The fundamental aspect of learning a language is exposing yourself to native material, i.e. reading and listening. You obviously do not need a tutor for that.

To add on to this, you need to make goals that are SMART.
>Specific – target a specific area for improvement.
>Measurable – quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress.
>Attainable – assuring that an end can be achieved.
>Realistic – state what results can realistically be achieved, given available resources.
>Time-related – specify when the result(s) can be achieved.

Just started a few days ago, but the guide is fucking confusing me.

It doesn't really say what to move on to next after the kana. It says vocabulary is essential, but that it's impractical to learn kanji at the same time as learning vocabulary. So do I just not learn kanji until I've gotten some vocabulary knowledge? I thought kanji was important. When do I move onto grammar? When was the last time this guide was updated?

It says
>Some people believe or find that individual study of the kanji is not as practical as simply learning the kanji via vocabulary
Key parts "some people believe" and "individual study". You can choose to study study kanji individually with RTK/KanjiDamage (which is slower, but will make learning vocabulary easier), or you can acquire kanji in the process of learning vocab (doing both at the same time). Try both and see which works for you.
>>
>>135556603
Guide is in the process of being revamped. Just grab the deck in the Anki startup guide for now while reading Tae Kim / Japanese: The Manga Way / Genki and see how that goes. Read the Anki manual to make sure you're using it right / have it set up right for you. If your retention is complete garbage a couple weeks in, consider getting a kanji radical deck or handwriting the problem words. If that doesn't help, then consider a form of individual kanji study. Not everyone learns the same, so you may like learning kanji through vocab more, or you may like learning kanji first more. I'd try kanji through vocab for now since it's less of a time investment to try. Something like RTK is a 3 month time investment if you're going at a rate of 25 kanji a day.
>>
>>135556738

Congrats on finishing Flyable Heart, I guess you really are likely to succeed if you try.
I think you misunderstood, Shou being pushed through dimensions was caused by the Kaichou's fireworks exploding, not by Suzuno. So then presumably Kururi was monitoring space-time and sent an agent back to correct the slip. Time travel plots always require a little suspension of disbelief.
If Shou had approached Suzuno before she went back, she wouldn't have recognised him at all, so it would have been pointless.
If you wanted to win the water gun fight or haunted house, you should've played it properly instead of cheating. It feels a lot more engaging and satisfying to navigate the choices yourself. I get you don't like trial-and-error gameplay, but then don't complain about how you didn't like it/wanted to win it.
>>
>>135556771

the navy has <20k personnel in japan, out of about 320k personnel total. that's fucking low compared to other career options where you basically have a 100% chance of getting where you want to go.
>>
>>135556603
It's not impractical at all. You just need to write down the kanji you see while grinding vocab a few times when you run into it.
>>

Thanks. I was really worried I wasn't going to finish at the end and I would have been really mad at myself.

I don't know if you were the one who told me about a week ago to give up because it was impossible, but if so, thanks. Over the last year I've gotten a lot of positive and negative comments here, and they are each motivating in their own way.

FH Spoilers
I guess I understood it right, but it just didn't make sense to me. I didn't understand how just a plain explosion could send him to another dimension so I assumed something else was going on. But if you read it the same way, then I guess that is the correct interpretation.

It is actually possible to win them? I tried a lot of different choices and always lost both of them. And I got all of the CGs, so it is weird that winning them doesn't give a CG.

I'll post my Flyable Heart chart one more time to get it out there.

>SMART

This is the ultimate problem with education facilities and language learning: They want to treat languages like math.

The best way to learn a language is to graze, and graze a lot. Mass exposure to native material is where you learn how natives use their language, along with being a fairly high resonance method for picking up vocabulary. When do you get there? When you're there. What do you do? Whatever you want. Just enjoy the journey, put in the time (this is the one thing that you should be very stringent with; try for at least an hour per day; don't go as easy on yourself as five minutes), and don't stress too much about where you are, and your progress will benefit from it.

>Anki

Anki is a great tool, but you'll find that anki can't really do its job as well as it could be without the grazing.

Don't limit reviews

Reviews will tend towards 10x your new/day
>>
>>135559697

Set your review limit to 9999. Alternatively, use custom study to get your reviews back down to zero. Finish your reviews every single day. This is the most important part of anki, even more important than adding new cards.

Up your new cards to 25, and see how you do.

Guys a word of warning.

Manga is good for starting off learning japanese but after you can get, say 90% of the material, its time to move on.

It is a hindrance to progress after a while. It provides too much context and is too visual, not to mention often times its too simple.

SMART is essentially stating that you need a series of specific, inflexible, time-sensitive checkpoints to move you from point to point in a focused manner. This is great (or even necessary) if you're trying to pay off your student loans over the next year, run five miles within a certain time, or are organizing a business venture with limited funds, but it's not necessarily to your benefit with language learning. Instead, you should focus on using strong methods (reading and listening to native material, looking things up as needed) and putting in the time. If you're fucking up, don't worry about it. Just push on. The only way to fail at learning Japanese is to use stupid methods and/or slack off too much.

If you do set a checkpoint, I'd make it general enough and far enough in the future that it's basically a "don't go too easy on yourself" checkpoint. For example, "pass N2 by next December". How you get there is described in very general terms that SMART advocates wouldn't like: You just read, listen, and if you feel that you're floundering a little, experiment with various methods that you believe might help you. If you're trying like a motherfucker, and it's obvious that, while you're making progress, you're not moving fast enough to pass the N2 by December, then just aim for next July. The important thing is that you're putting in the time.

>Also "the best way" is a fairly vague term. Best in what way?

Getting you to your goals in a quick and thorough manner. Ironically, making yourself overly structured will hurt your progress here, not help it. Listen to what you want, read what you want. Enjoy it. It's extremely important that you're having fun, both to keep you motivated and to help with your retention. Just make sure that you do it.
>>
>>135562069
I don't think you really understand it. Your suggestion of doing 1 hour per day for a year would meet all the requirements of SMART.

Passing N2 by next December is a SMART goal.
Reading 1 VN per month is a SMART goal.
Reading 1 VN per year is a SMART goal.
Doing 20 new words in Anki every day for a year is a SMART goal.
Doing 1 new word in Anki every day for a year is a SMART goal.

Vague goals like "lose weight", "eat less", "study more", "read more", etc are not SMART.
