How did something so convoluted and depressing became so mainstream?
Other than the designs of the Evas and maaayybeee the soundtrack I dont see how this series became so popular.

Not really. End of Evangelion is a bit abstract and EoTV quite a bit more so, but both have fairly clear theming. The series itself is also fairly straightforward. The final scene of EoE is really the only part of the series that's really ambiguous.

because its legitimately good fiction that can stand up with the output of the west. that sort of thing within anime or even within japan period is almost nonexistent. evangelion is a source of japanese pride. it was a story with a lot to say from a japanese perspective but it did so while remaining compelling to a universal audience.

In the first episode EVA Unit 01 protects Shinji with its hand even though Misato and Ritsuko claim it's not supposed to activate on its own.
