I like that the magic wasn't merely "extend your hand and say a few words", there was an actual technique with those huge rifles, and learning to shorten your incantations gave you the upper hand. Wish they showed more of that.

Not bad, nothing special but an easy watch with good action and fun characters. Its biggest advantage was airing in 2014, one of the driest years in recent history, making it seem better than it was.

In my opinion, it was exactly what a solid fantasy adventure anime should be. It had fun characters, an interesting setting that was introduced naturally, and even explored a couple of consistent themes that gave you something to consider.
It's an anime that doesn't have awkward and shitty exposition dumps, and that is a rarity and should be cherished.

First season was nice. Adorable main heroine with a cute speech pattern.
The first season scaled down the brocon of Akari, which ruined the manga and the second season for me.
I watched and thoroughly enjoyed the first season. I was left wanting more but then /a/ said S2 was shit so I decided not to bother.

Nice character designs and fun characters. First season was cool, but it shat the bed super hard in the second season where they had the last two episodes cut, but still decided to have the first 3 episodes of the second season be filler. If they just had 2 episodes per book like the first season, they would have had enough episodes to adapt the whole series remotely faithfully. Not sure what the director/writer were doing.
Plus it wasn't popular enough to have the novels get translated either officially or by fans, so the anime is the best we're ever going to get. Fuck.
