Anno and Gainax had profound reverence for scifi, mecha, and notably the tokusatsu genre.
Alot of what is in Evangelion is blatant acknowledgement, homages to what influenced the series coupled with Anno own psychological issues and he inserted that into the anime, it came off as something different from its contemporaries and ancestors.

"The General Zapped an Angel" isn't a novel, it's a collection of short stories and the cover art is nothing like the short from which the collection takes its name.
It actually takes place in Vietnam and the "zapping" is a US General shooting down the angel of the title with a machine gun.
The angel is a giant compared to the humans, being 20 feet tall, but nothing compared to the angels of Eva. It's presumed dead and lies motionless in a hangar for much of the story as everyone around has huge religious epiphanies and clerics from all over the world are called in.
It eventually wakes up and makes a few contemptuous remarks to the humans around it before flying off.
Overall it's pretty unremarkable and literally nothing like Eva save the cover art happened to look similar to how the End of Eva would look.
