FMA 03 is edgy trash. Nina death has no meaning. Hughes death has no meaning. Ed and Al don't grow, they are the same characters for the entire story and don't learn from their mistakes. Same for Roy and Scar. The entire story is basically "muh suffering" and the ending is terrible.

I think the general consensus is that 2003 had a more consistent tone and better music, but a completely bullshit ending whereas Brotherhood has a shitty start but a great ending.

It's not edgy trash just because it has darker moments/themes, Nina and Hughes deaths definitely have meaning, Ed, Al, Roy, and Scar definitely all grew as characters whether you liked the way they did it or not, and the entire story is not just "muh suffering". I don't think the ending it terrible but I will concede it is probably the weakest part of the series, so you were ALMOST right about that one thing.
I preferred the manga over both. 2003 comes off as fan fiction after you read the manga. Brotherhood is an alright adaptation. I prefer Brotherhood over 2003l because the fifth opening is a 10/10 opening.
